“We do not cover any loss, damage or liability as a result of your private home not complying with the National Building Regulations or any other laws or regulations that apply to building standards or maintenance”.
The above quote is from my Insurance Company,s policy wording. Can members please advise how the man in the street and the elderly can keep up to date with what is quoted.

I don't think you need to keep up to date with current building regulations.. if your current house as it is built was built according to regulation at the time, you should be fine..

Any new changes or additions should be per building regulations as applicable and added to plan, as applicable..

It's unrealistic to expect to rebuild a wall, previously built to regulations, just because that specific regulation was updated..

that's not really household insurance, that's more building insurance.

eg. you don't maintain your roof and then a storm comes past and blows half it off = no claim
eg. a big tree cracked your wall for years, then it fell down = no claim

but if your house bedroom wall was held up by sticky tape, and then fell down and crushed your computer, that would be negligence on your side.

etc etc etc, maintenance is a requirement in any and all insurance products

That is such a vague clause that it's almost meaningless. A typical house in the suburbs might have been built 60 or 70 years ago. Over all those years the laws and regulations around building standards have changed many times. That house might have countless small renovations and changes. Who the hell is going to be able to say what regulations applied at what time for a particular part of the house?
