How do I convert airtime to data on Nexus 7 tablet?

Maybe because it is only a problem for a small part of the population and they know they would not get google to move. Perhaps the OP could report it and see if he gets any joy...

You would probably know a lot better then me but, I am gonna guess that USSD was initially designed as a way to communicate from dumb phones?

I am also gonna guess that it has something to do with the fact that communication via IP is universal now. I think apps should be able to do what USSD does and more.

But remember this is not just a problem on Android tablets, various 3G routers has the same problem. I also read a while back that lots of "Windows phone" phones did/does not support USSD properly.

The solution is simple = zero rated web portal.

This is GSM network specific communication protocol. If you design device operating on such network, it is expected that such device support all network features.
Don't like USSD, chose network which has no USSD. :)
 
Where is Cell_C response to this problem?

All I got is two PM's from them to ask if I got any assistance regarding airtime to data conversion???? Here is my answer again: NO I DID NOT!
 
Any updates on this? Thinking of getting a Nexus 7 and using Cell C but this is a serious hurdle to be honest.

This isn't a Cell C problem? This is a Nexus 7 problem. Why do people always dump their problems at the feet of the SP's? Rather unfair.
 
Another possible solution to the sim problem = dual sim. One micro and one normal linked to each-other with one a phone and the other in the tablet (but only one can be active on the network at a time).

This does not only effect android tablets, I have the same problem (no ussd) with my 3G router. We could ask everyone in the world to change or we could ask cell c to change. Who you think will respond first?

They were quite happy to sell me a mirco SIM and install in in my tablet. They were happy to take my money to buy Airtime.
VODACOM, MTN and 8TA does not have this problem. Only Cell C prepaid has this problem. Please give us a your view Cell_C.

Tell me, which of these do you think could happen sooner?
  1. Google enable a feature that already exists on all Android handsets and a number of Android tablets.
  2. Cell-C add a whole section to their website with functionality that did not previously exist.

Honestly? Cell C add the function to their website.

I think only android tablets that support gsm voice calls supports ussd. Not sure why.

Maybe Google don't realize the rest of the world uses USSD, but they'll never know unless someone informs them.

If you are jailbroken look for U-Browser or QueryUSSD (both free). There is also emDial in the AppStore (free) - have not tested this.

I had a quick look at the AppStore apps, all seem to be iPhone only as they rely on copy'n'paste into the dialler. So jailbreak is your only option for iPad (it works perfectly for me).
