Man this is really irratating.

I dont have an ipod and i wont have an ipod.

I used to be able to disable the 'ipod service' in admin tools. and following that i would delete the ipod folder in 'programs', and that would take car of 'ipod' crap running in the background.

Now i have itunes 702, and even if i do the above..... the next time i start itunes, some installer thing happens, and ipod is right back where i dont want it.

I have googled for a solution but all's i get is how to keep the flippin ipod, and other ipod kuk.

I dont want the ipod service thing running in the background, it wastes my resources, and i have absoloutley no need for it.

Anyone know how to bury this thing.

But you still want to use itunes to play music i take it?? I would just delete the whole app. I am not a big fan of itunes/ipods. They have never really worked with my pc at all...

I've been using itunes for quite a few years now, and am not about to change. Have tried other (some repeatly), but i always come back to itunes.

Musicmatch, winamp, and many others that i've tried... are not for me and my PC.

...and yes, itunes is my music player.

So, back to the question .... any helpers?

Finally, a bonus tip for users of iTunes without iPods: You can save the 4MB of memory that the iPod Service uses by disabling it. Click on the Start menu, choose run, and type in services.msc, then click OK. Right-click iPod Service, click Stop if the service is running, then under ‘Startup type’ select Disabled. Remember that if you do later buy an iPod and want to be able to synchronise it with iTunes or update the firmware you will need to re-enable this service, though you’ll still be able to use it with other programs like Winamp.

Hansa, your quote is what i had done previously, but since itunes v702, i cant seem to be able to do this. (as my first post)

I tried renaming the ipod exe as well.

Then you restart your PC, and ipod is back again.. running in the background.... f ' ing annoying.

...i'll keep fiddling with it, something normally happens sooner or later.

Just to satisfy my curiosity what sort of overheads is it using?

EDIT - Have you tried renaming ipodservice.exe to something else then creating a dummy ipodservice.exe file in it's place?

i think its time to forget the past and imbrace the future, try getting used to another media player, and kick out itunes,

...lol (and what player do you suggest?)

Um, i wanted to multi-quote here, but i dunno how to..

So - bwana, no itunes extras running right now ,And i simply renamed the exe to .dogsballs, and when i restart PC, the original file appears again. Not sure how to create a dummy file?, or did i do that?

And Bekdik - I've got same version as you, and i've disabled and stopped it many times now, and when i restart itunes, a installer thing start happening for itunes. Maybe my .msi? is stuffed?

Although 7.02 is quite buggy apparently, but Bekdik aint having the problems i am......

I'll keep fiddling....

Hey Boodles - I have the same hassels so its not your system. I stop the service, disable it and once I start iTunes, the service is running again. It however does not bother me - I just wanted to test your theory.

Do you even know how much crud XP starts up and yet you worry about a little 4MB iPod helper service ???.

Im running 2k. Look, with my piddly, 256 ram, every bits helps. And besides, why should something be wasting its time away in the background when it can be canned.

I even have short cut on my quick launch toolbar thingee for task manager, so i can do regular checking. (amonst other uses as well)

..and thanks for feedback ADSL3G..

...still dont know how to use multi quote thingee, spose i should find out how...

this most simple solution is to get an iPod
Much better than a Zune.

Don't think its possible to disable the service anymore, iTunes needs the service now before it loads (this is a good thing for ipod users of course)

you can end the service process with Task manager after it loads with iTunes though

Oh, shooot. This is not good news.

Perhaps i'll need to backtrack and install previous version.

I dont want to do that though....

...or perhaps i'll start looking for another player (again), which i dont want to do right now, and doubt that i'll find something i like because there is nothing out there...

Its actually f ' en crap... and the more i talk about it the more i get pissed offf....

Rechecked. I'm not getting any install messages, but the ipod service is re-enabled and started when itunes starts. It happens silently in the background without any warnings.

I use WMP11, like iTunes but ram is an issue(I have a gig of ram but less is more) I mainly use iTunes for ripping, burning and organising(no player compares IMO)
foobar is another one of my fav's

Do you have a problem with the ipodservice running, or just because you want to save memory?

If you want to save memory running iTunes I recommend iTunes multi-plugin
Enable memory saving when minimized to tray:
If you enable this option, along with the "Minimize iTunes window to system tray" feature found in the Advanced tab of the Preferences dialog, the amount of memory iTunes is using will drop significantly when you minimize iTunes.
http://www.aqua-soft.org/board/showthread.php?t=38334

I've achieved 10MB and less memory usage

Edit: lol multi-plugin has got me back to lovin my iTunes

Rob, i have a problem with ipodservice running.

Its like driving your car with the wind-screen wipers on and it aint raining... lol

And i'm glad that others are having same problem, bekdik. Maybe a registry edit would take care of this.

But as rob33 said, it seems to need to start ipod service before it loads itunes.

Anyway, I aint found nothing on the net yet to get around this, but i'll keep looking.
