Hi guys,
so at the begging of next month I will have Axxess Express + uncapped and Telkom 7GB cap. The 7GB is for my moms office(situated in our cottage). Now I know I could switch the router to the Telkom account every mourning for my moms office but I would like to leave downloads on all day which I cant d/l on the telkom account. So is it possible to put the Axxess account into my router (which the office also connects to) but make their PC's dial into the telkom account?

Now this means they will NOT be throttled during the day by the Axxess and my download will NOT be used on the Telkom account!

I am sure this must be possible!
Thanks

sure... just use "half - bridge mode"

The one account goes into the router as the default and then on the office PC's you create dial-up PPPoE accounts and set them on auto-dial, never disconnect.

Another method is to put your router into "bridged" mode, then either

1. Create PPPoE accounts for every ISP you use in your Windows' Network Connections folder and us it that way...
2. Or use Smoothwall to manage the connections...

so you guys are both saying the same which means it should work :)

So would this work.. I just make a PPPoE on MY PC dialing into Axxess and use the Telkom in my router? would this not use my Telkom cap as well?

No, it is not exactly the same....

Bridged mode = NO default connection on the router, ALL connections made on the PC using PPPoE. When no PPPoE connections are active on the computers then they cannot access the internet.

Half-Bridge mode = one default connection on the router, Any other connections made on the PC. When no PPPoE connections are active on the computers then they default back to the connection specified in the router.

Does that make sense?

It also depends whether your router allows half-bridge mode or full-bridge mode.

would this not use my Telkom cap as well?

no, all traffic is tunneled through the PPPoE connection ignoring the other connection.

But BE CAREFUL... if your line drops and then defaults to the other connection it will start chewing the bandwidth there, so you have to set your connection to "never disconnect", "redial if dropped" and be the default connection.

if i was you i would do it other way round
i would dial using pppoe on my pc using the uncapped account
then make default on router the 7 gb account

therefore they can use their account all the time and they cant accidently use your account cause you using pppoe dialing

What you could also do is create a static IP address for yourself and leave out the DNS and default gateway therefore you won't connect to the telkom account via the router and only use the dial in account you key in. If you do happen to disconnect it wont go to he default connection

ya will do that.. just thought it would be easier the other way round but it makes more sense to have main connection as uncapped!

WRT my router having full/half bridge.. I have these options:
-Pure Bridge(full?)
-PPPoE with pass-through (half?)

-PPPoE with pass-through (half?)

i use this and works fine if it disconnects your account stops downloading so it will never use the 7 gb account unless you click resume not sure if it will carry on using download accelerators havent tested that yet

Ja, I'd also feel like my money was dying everyday with Telkom. ;) :p :D

so now I got a problem(I think):

AA= Telkom account with cap
BB= Telkom account without cap

Last night I put my router into "PPPoE with pass-through" and set the router to have the AA. Then on my PC I dialed into the BB so I can download on local ;)

But this mourning when I woke up(d/l on the whole night) I find my AA is now without. So I thought that my PPPoE thing didnt work or it dropped in the night(switching me to the AA). But when I check on Telkom's tracking, it says that BB used its local cap and AA didnt! meaning that I couldnt have downloaded on AA else it would have used local cap on that account once its was finished with int cap.

All that was done on the net last night was a bit of Xbox Live and some internet casino's. And I went through a whole GB! which has never happened before!

So what could have happened? This un-capped cant come sooner!

And now to top it off, the Telkom Top Up portal is down so I have to use a slow ass proxy :(

mmmm - strange one - I have no idea what could've happened there. What I would like to advise you to change right now is: remove the default gateway and DNS off your pc which you are using to download because if for some strange reason that PC can't get a PPPOE connection using the uncapped account, then it will default back to your limited cap account on the router.

If you make the above change there can NEVER be any way that your downloads eat into your business\limited cap - unless you put the gateway and DNS back in.

As an aside - I only found out about this whole half-bridge setup after having ADSL for over 2 years and continually having fights with my colleagues when I had to have our ADSL on local only to finish downloading an episode of Top Gear on Monday mornings :D. I am soo stoked that I can download happily on a local account while they happily surf off the International cap! Wish I had known how easy it was to set it up 2 years ago! :o

thanks.. all my stuff is set to Auto! i FELL THE SAME AS YOU!
