my system says 320mb ram

if i go to windows task manager it shows the following:

Physical memory (k)
total 327152
available 86844
system cache 129068

kernal memory (k)

total 45992
paged 36996
nonpaged 8960

PF usage 358mb

with that amount you dont have to speculate whether or not you need more or not, assuming you're running xp?

upgrade to at least 1gb of ram

Go 2GB... Memory is cheap these days...

PC Zone has 2Gb DDR2 800mhz for R240 ... single stick

If your computer's hard drive is always busy when you're working/playing and it's not obviously loading something, and it gets jerky ... then windows is using your hard drive as if it was memory, something you want to avoid.

This "using your hard drive as if it was memory" is called virtual memory or swap file. Once windows starts using it, get more memory, or run fewer applications.

Or prepare to do A LOT of waiting...

Unless you're running PhotoShop, some virtual machine or running
3D games, more than 1GB under XP is actually a waste.

i don't play any games of note on my pc, its just sometimes the files don't wanna open if i have installed something on my pc like my music but if i delete stuff then it works.

i would say minimum of 2 gig ram for xp and 4 gig vir vista, but i guess some people like the slow pace....

:note
for the OS to address 4 gig and more it has to be 64bit.

i am reading on google what to do and it seems simple enough but i am still worried about putting the ram in myself, should i be?

You're right it's strange but for everyday use such as
Office, Internet, VOIP, watching video or listening to music - even at top load
my XP Pro usually has about a GB of it's 2GB installed FREE (physical memory).

On my 7GB Mac, Final Cut Pro can take a max of 2GB, Ps 3GB (Ps on Mac is 32Bit) and if I run VMWare Fusion and WinXP under that - VMWare can take 3GB
but otherwise running MS Office 2004 under Mac OSX it's the same story, 6GBs of RAM just idle along.

the process is very simple; just make sure that if you have ddr2 then you get ddr2 and not ddr or ddr3.

then putting it in you will note where the ram connectors are there is a small half circle (this now being on the ram and not the slot as the slot will have a hump) that must fit in correctly with the slot when pressed down into it.

just remember to have the slot's clips in open position for as you slot in the ram the will go with light click into closed position.

lastly double check that both clips are closed and ram is in 100% horizontally fitted and not at an angle.

....at start do a quick discharge of yourself. (static wise)
