How do i know if i need more memory?

On the topic of memory, Will I notice an increase in speed if I upgrade from 2gig to 4gig under vista playing games etc.?

that's a very broad based question . . .

the best answer i can give would be that if you want more 'speed' when playing games, and im assuming that by speed you mean a higher frame rate, then you would be better off upgrading your display card.

2gb of ram is ok for gaming if you have a good display card . . .

the ati 4850 comes well recommended.

So is a graphics card the main frame rate modifier in gaming?

For example. I have a C2D 1.86ghz and 2gigs ddr2800mhz with a 7900GTX.

If I get that ati 4850 will I be able to play GTA IV at a higher framerate??

Eish. Both the E6300 and the 7900GTX are quite old pookster, I don't think you will see a huge differance if you upgrade only the CPU/GPU. You need both. Why not go for the E5200 2.5Ghz and the HD4850, if you shop around this shouldn't cost more than R3000 and you can keep your motherboard, will see a big improvement.

Would it be more worth it chucking the whole thing?

Or is upgrading still feasable?

Definately worth upgrading. You say you have a 1.86Ghz C2D, so im guessing a E6300 which will have a DDR2 board. What model is your board exactly? It might even support a Q6600.

Yup an E6300.
My motherboard? It's a Gigabyte 965P-S3.

Yup, it supports Quad core if you want. I'd just take the cheaper E5200 and OC, its really easy.

You can get these for a lot cheaper if you look around.

Only problem is dont expect GTA4 to run like it does on the consoles, even people with GTX280's struggle. What a fusk up of a game.

Cool thanks I will save. :)

Will you help me overclock when I get it?

I know GTAIV is so annoying I can run Far Cry 2 on almost full graphics no issues, but not GTAIV.

Im not exactly a pro ITO overclocking but there are plenty of people here you can help out. Thats how I learnt.

i just bought 1gb memory and at a glance it seems faster, is there anything i need to check, alter or tweak?

You could try to download that utility and enable the core system performance checkbox. It may speed up things a bit by preventing the kernel from being swapped. Tune Up utilities also has such an option.

Although according to this:

they disagree.

What you can do, if you have two harddrives is put the swap file on a seperate harddrive, but defragment that hd first. Having the swap file on a seperate HD to your application programs speeds things up a bit too.

I'd also go through the startup processes and disable as much as possible,
all the stupid little widgets that load, Winzip taskbar applet, etc - get rid of all of that, it will speed up your bootup process.

just had this thought, can i put my 256mb memory card in next to my 1gb card and will it show me more memory?
