Ive recently bought a E272 from the vodashop in East Rand mall for R2350, but am unable to get my MTN sim to work - so iv'e got 7.2 mb/s straight out of the box (unlike e220 which needs upgrading) but am only limited to vodacom's crap 3.6mbs, soon to be back to 1.8 mbs after April 30th =(

DOES ANYONE KNOW HOW TO USE AN MTN SIM ON THIS DEVICE, i mean, can you use a MTN SIM on Vodafone? The guy selling me the E272garanteed me it will work on MTN. the software keeps telling me wrong SIM inserted.....

MTN_Dude, if you see this, please shed some light 4 me!!!!

That was a good price. I saw one today for R2569. They tell me these things only came out yesterday.
The UK price from Vodafone (locked, Pay as you go) is £99 (R1600).

I think workability depends on the software in the device. I read here that the UK 272 works with both MTN & Voda so maybe they diddled with it when it landed. Certainly the box is a little different.

-- HAve you enabled the SIM for 3.6/7.2 ??

Mobile devices have not been network locked in SA for a good couple of years now. Does the sim work in a phone?

I'm new to MTN, how do I enable the MTN SIM for 3.6/7.2 ??

Can anyone give me a straight answer whether or not Huawei's Vodafone branded Modems are network locked to Vodacom? Specifically the E272. - can't seem to get anything about it! not even drivers for it on Huawei's Website!!!

Seems like i'm the first guy to own a E272....and it Sucks! (well, to be the first)

Not the first ... he, he... :D

I believe ginggs should be able to help you out. He's been doing a lot of testing on this thread http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?t=102556

I'll be watching from the gallery for now.

I also don't see the E272 on the Huawei website, but isn't the driver on the device itself in the flash drive?

Keeper,
In order to help you we need some information.

Put the SIM into the white unit before connecting via the short cable. Mine came with 2 plus an adaptor.

The VMC Lite software should run automatically and install itself on your PC from the memory of the unit. You have to be very patient with it because it takes its time and sometimes doesn't auto-install until you restart (as it did with mine).

Once the waiting is over, the window should come up with all the settings and so on. It can also be opened via the tray at the bottom.

You should immediately see the MTN Network in a small window at the top with signal strength. There is also a slide/connect button near it.

I believe it tells you "Wrong SIM" at that location. The UK one says "You must be connected to the Vodafone network" because it's locked, but should still indicate the network of the SIMcard.

MTN uses a different APN, so there should be a drop down list of APNs selectable from the main menu (settings I think - I'm using something else to connect for the moment). In that selection, is there an MTN SA listed at all?

If not, you have to enter the APN manually. AFAIK it's called myMTN.

Let me know your reaction to the above, and we can continue or at least by then someone else can step in.

Vodacom and MTN both use an "internet" apn;).

I didn't do any testing with an MTN SIM in the E272.
Provided the device is not network locked, you should be able to create a dial-up networking connection manually and use E620 Tool to connect to the internet and monitor your data usage.
Yo,

Can you shed some light on 'enabling' a SIM for the higher (superior) speeds that MTN provides (allegedly ;)) Is it a matter of called an operator and asking for it to be done?

Oh, and what's this E620 tool for? VMC Lite has "data useage" software far as I can see.

AFAIK you don't need to.

Best to ask v3g in the Vodacom section, but after the fuss that was made when they locked a couple of E620s I don't think they'll try that again.

I think that's because the E272 is exclusive to Vodafone.

Can't Use Vodafone drivers

It is on the Drive itself, but it's vodafone software - IE: No MTN in the list you select. I need "CLEAN" Huawei Drivers, or MTN Drivers/Dash - and MTN's site also says nothing about it...

If I create a connection manually, it wont connect either - gives a long error about PPP/Slip/Unix Connection bla bla, sure youve seen it before...

Damn - i wish MTN had stock of the E220, i couldnt find any, anywhere!

If you've installed the drivers you should be able to create the connection manually and connect. Check your dial-up networking settings again.

No you don't, the E272 is a better device.

If one loaded a generic version of VMCLite, from Huwawei let's say, would that upset the ones on the main unit? Do you have to back up the software on it & can you set it to run from the PC?

I mean, how convenient it would have been simply to allow a user to add a new APN?? Gawdamn software people and their childish attitudes!!

That depends, most of the dashboard updates from Huawei (and MTN and Vodacom) replace the contents of the emulated CD-ROM on the device itself, but you can install a different dashboard (if you get hold of the installer) to the one that's on your device and switch between them.

I have Huawei Mobile Partner (works with E620, E220 and E272), Huawei Mobile Connect and MTN F@stlink all installed on my PC. If E620 Tool doesn't do everything you need, Huawei Mobile Partner is my next suggestion.

I think it's blocked

Ok - ive figured out 2 things:

1) The Vodafone software won't let me create and select my own APN Settings with an MTN SIM - it's just not possible! i cant even edit/delete the preset Vodacom APN!
if the MTN SIM is in it automatically selects the vodacom APN as default, and you cant even see other APN's in the drop down!

When the Voda SIM is in, you can however.....

2) Creating my own Internet connection doesnt work - what settings should I check??? all I have to enter is the Server Number, isnt it?
*99# or *99***1# ?

I think i'm gonna need to flash the Vodafone Drivers....hmm...doesnt seem like a good idea....although i did get a Backup CD in the package, I suppose they know people will be trying to flash their crappy software :D

where do I get the Huawei Mobile Partner Software? Huawei's site?
link pretty Pah-lease??

Better check the CD first, mine wouldn't load at all! Can't you backup the firmware from the device?

what u mean wouldnt load? u got the E272 as well?
