How about this: Woodstock, R9000 for 1 small bedroom place with decent security..oh and hardly any place for the wife's clothing!! That is right we have to give away clothing because as there isn't enough space! We cannot invite anyone around because Capetonians don't like "small places" and are rather snobbish and too class-conscious. The estate agents and landlords are generally rich people who have multiple apartments and rip people off as they know there are plenty of willing suckers to come here to see their piece of the 'mountain'.

People say that since we live in a beautiful place we don't have to be paid much as we have the outdoors for 'free'. Lets look at this closer, shall we? If you live close to the mountain your rentals will be extreme and you won't have money to do anything but 'free' stuff. If you want to do MTB, as everyone in CT says they do then you are rich indeed to afford their 'carbon fibre' dream machines of about 80k+. Then people say: "You can go for a picnic on Lion's Head". Ok, how am I going to hike up the bloody mountain with a basket and my wife in tow?? Here is another one: "You can go for a walk on the beach" - when there is no South Easter and please don't tell me about swimming which is as cold as Capetonians themselves.

I can't really relate to what you are saying about Cape Town (I'm assuming you are mainly referring to the CBD?) as I live and work in the northern suburbs and I don't really like the CBD to be honest (I would take Edward Street over Long Street any day).

That being said I would never live in Woodstock and at that rent! I know its been going through gentrification but there are still many elements roaming around. I sometimes see car window glass on the ground outside the Biscuit Mill (and I always assume someone got relieved of some of their possessions). If I had to work in the CBD I would rather stay in the northern suburbs and sit in traffic in the morning than live in Woodstock, and for R9k a month you can get a whole house with a garden in the north.

The other night I dreamt I bought a MTB for R70k and buyers remorse kicked in almost immediately.

Eish Woodstock is dodge, I wouldn't want to come visit there either. People in jhb a lot friendlier than people in CT. When meeting strangers in CT the first question is usually "what school did you go to?" to judge your "class" or something or maybe just who you might have in common (because these will be your friends). "class" being how much money your parents have of course. It's not OK to name a school not in Cape Town.
In jhb people ask "where do you work?" because these will be your friends. It doesn't really matter where you're from or school etc. It matters what job you have and what car you drive.

Everyone I know that's into cycling in jhb have carbon fiber bikes BTW. Also hipsters in CT are really annoying. Hipsters mostly being kids with rich parents that like to pretend they have real jobs of course.
There are dodgy areas in Woodstock, there are also great areas too. Lots of heritage and beautiful houses.

I have been in Cape Town for nearly a year now.

We downgraded in the size of house compared to the one we had in balito, so yeah it's slightly more expensive.

Agree with the clique part, still haven't made any real friends but I have run into people that I have met some years ago in jhb and Durban.

I like that there is so much to do, and great food as well.

I fully agree with you on all points!!!

I have been here for a while and I can tell you CT is not all roses at all! Do not be fooled by IT companies and their promises here as they are not that awesome. You go for an interview and they talk about SOLID principles and all sorts of technical stuff which they don't even implement! I have been around and what passes for 'software' is rather shocking in CT anyway!

Rentals/Property:

How about this: Woodstock, R9000 for 1 small bedroom place with decent security..oh and hardly any place for the wife's clothing!! That is right we have to give away clothing because as there isn't enough space! We cannot invite anyone around because Capetonians don't like "small places" and are rather snobbish and too class-conscious. The estate agents and landlords are generally rich people who have multiple apartments and rip people off as they know there are plenty of willing suckers to come here to see their piece of the 'mountain'.

If you want a cheap rental, then be prepared to spend the amount you saved on petrol as the traffic is getting worse than Joburg and public transport is still only for tourists and the poor (no hope in sight for buses in Durbanville or even southern suburbs). In the end you either pay in petrol/time or rental but don't expect anything cheap in CT - be warned!!

Buying property in CT must be done very carefully and hopefully with "Mom and Dad's" money as the average salary in CT does not match the property market! Good luck to those who paid for overpriced property ;)

Salaries:

If you are not in IT, engineering or some high-demand skill be prepared for 15k a month even if you have a masters deg - and it will be swallowed by rental anyway ;)

People say that since we live in a beautiful place we don't have to be paid much as we have the outdoors for 'free'. Lets look at this closer, shall we? If you live close to the mountain your rentals will be extreme and you won't have money to do anything but 'free' stuff. Here is another one: "You can go for a walk on the beach" - when there is no South Easter and please don't tell me about swimming which is as cold as Capetonians themselves.

Social:

Be prepared for a cold social scene because if you don't have an aforementioned MTB, nor a hipster, you are NOT going to make friends for quite a while. The only decent people are those are in Durbanville/Bellville area, the rest are too self-centered and not bothered to socialise with the 'peasants'.

My advice for anyone thinking of coming to CT: THINK TWICE!! Only come here if they offer you R50k+! Do not be bullsh&%ed by the marketing of "best city in SA" or tourist brochures. How many times will you be able to enjoy the 'mountain' or winelands besides on weekends? I made the mistake of coming here as I earned less in the EC but I got out so much more: I was able to go overseas every year, buy a property overseas and pay off my car in record time.

Since moving to CT it has been a massive dissapointment and I urge people to think very carefully about CT and not just think emotionally.
Have you considered the problem might be you and not the millions of poeple in CT who do not want to be friends with you? ;-)

I work in IT and earn decent money.
Live is southern subburbs and never have enough time to meet up with all the friends / braais / events.

Oh, i dont MTB (dont own a bike!)

How expensive is it really though? anybody care to shed some light on rent prices?

Living in Centurion, you also won't get a decent 3-bed place for under 8 to 10k, and that's only townhouses. That's my experience from looking recently though.

8k for a 1 bed loft(unfurnished) in Cape town city center. The only reason I can afford to live there is because of joint income.

3 bed you are looking at 14k upward.

Living in the city center is something else. I am used to living on small holdings and normal houses. But since living in the CBD, I would not mind buying here some day.

I literally walk everywhere except to work as I work in Century city. The wife works in the city so she walks. When you are bored, there is tons of things to do. And I find cape town pretty safe(the CCID area) compared to where I stayed in the northern suburbs.

If you do not have children but are married, I would say it is worth spending the extra money to stay in the city of a year or two. Awesome experience.

I can't really relate to what you are saying about Cape Town (I'm assuming you are mainly referring to the CBD?) as I live and work in the northern suburbs and I don't really like the CBD to be honest (I would take Edward Street over Long Street any day).

Edward streed died. Long live Long Street!

As for the mountain bike thing, I own one. And it cost brand new R1600. I see many people in town with low budget cycles like mine. Not all capetonians do the Argus.

Friends, I moved from the Nothern suburbs to cape town so still have all my same friends, I just drive to Brackenfell for braai's on weekends. It is not like I saw my friends in the week to start with.

Ja @ 9K for Woodstock I'd be pissed too. It amazes me how people can tar the entire Cape Town with the same brush when they've only experienced a single suburb. By comparison, we bought a place in Klipkop (Parow Valley) 3 years ago and couldnt be happier. Our bond is 6K, and we both the missus and I commute in to town by train daily. When we need to, we take the car. We're close to all amenities, and it's still a piece of piss to get out and about .

Ours is a free standing house (not in a complex) and we get on great with all our neighbours, who are friendly as hell and from all walks of life. Neighbour opposite is a Telkom techie who sorted me out with a packet of connectors when I asked him for one after our maid vacuumed the phone box to hell. My next door neighbour has let me use his bakkie when I needed to, and made me a braai as a thank you after I hired him to make our sliding gate and gave him an old PC monitor we were throwing out. The retired old oom on the corner has lived there for ages and offers gardening services etc.

When I walk my dogs I'll stop and have a chat when I see folks around. I know where 2 SAPS officers in the neighbourhood live etc. just from exchanging pleasantries at the park. No one's asked me where I went to school, is looking at how wealthy/poor I am or any of that guff.

There's more to Cape Town than the City Bowl or southern subs people.

That is exactly why I prefer it. Long Street is like another world. If I want the Long Street experience I just drive down Voortrekker road in Parow late at night.

So you would only go to Long street for Hookers and drugs? Then the drive to Voortrekker in parow would be your best bet and a shorter drive.

When we move to Cape Town, we'll LOVE to live in Vredekloof (Brackenfell), but its a bit expensive. I love the cleanliness and sense of safety.

Are there similar neighborhoods in the northern suburbs we can look at?

I was actually referring to the fact that I can go to both places, close my eyes and open it again and I not feel like I'm in Cape Town.
