How do software developers afford Cape Town rental

I live in SW and work in Pinelands and wife works in Mowbray. Because we work at different times, we travel in two cars. I leave home at 07:30 and get to work at 08:25. Leave at 17:00 and get home at 18:00.

Wouldn't trade SW for anything though.

So you travel 2-3 hours every day just so you can travel less on the Weekend?
I never understood this.

Somerset is lovely and all but I value a short commute over everything else.
My commute is 20 mins, my wife's is 5.

Medical: Irrelevant, same as everywhere else in the country

Actually it's cheaper at the coast because people are happier.

Discovery offer special discount packages at the Coast and I'm sure so do others.

Still at mom and pops?

Rent is not THAT cheap, but living necessities only take about 1/4 of my developer income. 3/4 goes to savings and investments. At least in the months I can resist buying toys.

Coming from the mall traffic can get bad sometimes. I go on the N2 and get to the beach via Main road.

The other thing about not wanting to move closer is the property I would be getting would not be the same. Currently on a 1000m^2 plot with 4 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms and a pool. No way that I would get the same/similar property in the southern suburbs for R1.6m with plenty of space for my 3 German shepherds.

You would be surprised.

Anyway. Why not live somewhere like Edgemead ?

My googling skills must be lacking.

Minimum requirements are:

4 bedrooms
2 bathrooms (M.E.S.)
Pool
Not less than 1 000m^2
Not more than R1.6m

This is what I will be giving up on Somerset west.

I could probably rent out my house and rent a property closer to my work and retire back to Somerset west.

i feel sorry for some people. I drive 5~15 min max in the mornings to my job and currently earning above average compared to software developers in JHB. And to the guy that pointed out that 1.6 million $ house in CA you must remember they also earn allot more. The starting rates for developers with degree in denver is 80k+$ per annum so that relates to about 900 000k. Then at mid level your easily over the 130k$.

^^ Even if a U.S. developer is earning 160k USD p.a., that 1.6 million dollar house is still ten times his annual salary.

It's 1.8 million as well. :). The thing is it's a ****hole - the building is condemned!

I lived in the area for nearly a decade and earned a lot more than $130k - it's still insanely expensive and a terrible purchase. The only reason they can ask so much is because of the fairytale small town vibe and high density of multimillionaires.

The great thing about working in the area is how much disposable income you have once your living situation is sorted - until then it's fairly tough.

so I may have a chance to relocate to the Century City area. what's the chances of me finding a 3 bedroom (that allows x2 dogs) for about R10k a month? what areas would you recommend to look in?

I know of a 3 bed house in royal ascot that is going for 10k rent a month.

What size of the dogs?

I wouldn't keep medium or large dogs on those small gardens.

The best solution is to move into a digs with friends. Cost sharing is quite nice (Sharing cost of maid/dstv/internet/gardenboy/electricity)

All in I spend R6000pm in a 4 man house around the city bowl. If I stayed in a bachelors in the CBD I would be paying R7500 just for the apartment.

I can always live alone when im sick of living with people but for now I am saving a lot of money.
