How do you cope without water?

Currently battling the great Bryanston water outage of 2018 now. Just bought 12 5l water bottles as I don't trust the JHB Water updates...

Currently thinking of installing a 10k l JoJo tank in the property somewhere...

I have a 40l container stored and would use this for more general stuff.
And a few 5l for drinking and kooking.
It works for a emergency 1 or 2 days without water.
I could probably push it to a week if I have too in extreme emergency.

When I have no water for more than a day (happened once I think), I simply go to shower at friends.

I can also plan last minute visits to project sites and escape the outage until it's back.

No electricity is the real bummer for me. No phone, no cooking, no TV, no internet, no light, no nothing.

True, if the outage be it water or power is out longer than a day, especially in a 1st world city, thats a BIG no no and then i can understand the outrage. Especially if its water. But the SG power out for 30 min, lol.

Anyway back on topic, i don't deal well without water unless its short. Not having a shower at night = death. Only had a disruption i think once that lasted more than 1 day, just went to friends house to shower.

I have a 5000 litre jojo tank set up as a buffer between the mains and the house.
I don't even know there's no water until the street whatsapp group lights up... and then I'm ok for 5-8 days.

What type of pump do you use from the Jojo tank & is it on 24/7?

I have a Jojo for my borehole that's only used for the sprinklers but would like to link it to the house as a backup water supply.

^ This.

Also helps if you have a JoJo. In that case you can still flush the toilet via bucket system, take a cold shower, and potentially drink the water (after you boil it). Technically you can survive just fine and you dont need to leave the house.
That's the way to do it
As above. The only way to ensure you have water during an outage is to have your own personal water reservoir (Jojo tank).

A 5 000l tank should be enough to last a few weeks and even more than a month if you ration it.

You could set it up so that you don't even know that the municipal water supply is off.

Municipal supply - > Jojo tank with float switch - > pump - > pressure tank - > house.

A setup like this could cost as little as R10k.

At my home I'm fine without power. I just have some camping stuff, lights and gas braai. The biggest issue I have with a power outage is boardom.

The pump only needs a pressure switch that will turn it on when a tap is opened and of again when the tap is closed. You shouldn't need to replace your borehole pump.

10k is a bit low. A decent pump is more than that.

I have a dab e.sybox pump, yes it runs 24x7 (on demand)

I have a Dab pump as well with a pressure tank that cost me just over R3k about 6 months ago. 2 500l water tank was R2 600. Pressure switch was R350.

It's supplying my entire house without any pressure/flow issues.

I live in a flat so there is absolutely no way I can have a 5000l JoJo tank. Although right now I wish I had one.

I see that Joburg Water tweeted about water tankers in Bryanston, so water will definitely not be back today.

Not bad. I like the e.sybox though. Inverter powered so super efficient, very quiet, integrated pressure vessel and automatic pressure management to a set point.

Where did you get this from, prices I am seeing is R5k +

This is the dab pump and pressure tank I got at Benbel for R3 150. They stock different brands now and have not seen the dab one in stock last time i was there a few weeks ago.

No water - we can last about 30 days using the swimming pool water.

No power - we can last indefinitely thanks to a built in/wired in generator harking back to load shedding days.

On the bright side, living in Africa does help keep you tough. Where else in the world do people routinely have JoJo tanks backing up their water supply and generators / UPSes backing up their power? Lights go off in San Francisco and it might as well be a zombie apocalypse. Down here meanwhile a zombie apocalypse is just a normal day at the office.
I don't see it as a bright side. One should not have to be tough to live in a country, especially since you pay for these services that are disrupted.

Exactly this. Singapore had a power failure the other day... for 30 minutes... at 1am.... it is pathetic (these people can be such pussies).

"OMG NO POWER, ITS SO HOT, HOW I CANT SLEEP", "THE streets are so dark, drive safe everyone", "Will my food spoil in the fridge in 30 min?", "#GreatSGBlackout", "How do you cope without power?", "Singapore is so backwards, how can have power outage" and so on and so forth........ agggg
No sarcasm detected
