How do you keep bananas fresh?

Well for all fruit and veg, keep them away from tomotoes as they give off a gas that causes fruit to rippen. Also keep them in the crisper of your fridge as the crisper is designed for that. Also make sure the crisper shelf is the right side down - the smooth surface should be at the top and the bumpy surface at the bottom.

No special use. I HATE throwing food away. I enjoy them a lot but hate them at the slight sign of "softening" :D... Half of the bag I usual buy gets thrown away. No, cant buy smaller, already buying smallest package.

Buy from a cafe or some place and pack your own bananas (Quantity & Quality wise) that way you don't buy too much.

Otherwise banana bread is a very good alternative use for bananas that are just too ripe to eat.

Snap. Good to see I'm not the only health freak out there who doesn't like wasting. :p

Yeah, feels good.:p
When I saw posts 2 and 3 I thought to myself that was a REALLY stupid Q and these guys are gonna hang me... Forget what I said in post 1 about "stupid Qs". :D

Then buy loose, that way you can pick some that are riper than others. When they just start to get brown spots, they're good for eating, even if still green around the stalk. I hate bruised fruit.

Keep them away from anything ripening, or that may be producing ethanol.

Started doing that recently. I usually take two to work, 1 for around 10am and another 1 just before gym. We usually buy them on Sundays (no time for midweek shopping), but I really hate how they are about Tues afternoon. I always go for "green" when doing shopping.

We have a problem with tomatoes....it only takes one to spoil a pack :(

When you store them, seperate them, i.e. do not keep them attached in a bunch but remove each of them from the "stem", else they infect each other faster when they start to ripen.

Keep them in the fridge is good advice. Woolworths are either ignorant of the fact that the fruit actually stays ripe in spite of the black skin or they're catering to those who like their bananas pristine yellow so they can show them off in public.

Doesn't all fruit give off the same gas when ripening?

I think you mean ethylene.
