How does a chip upgrade work

When I hear concepts like stages I'm wary of the person not living in a real world. You do the mods you want and can afford. It's not a game where you have to unlock a stage lol.

Lol hilarious hey.
But it is like a game that you have to unlock stages.
A stage 2 map is only optimal with an exhaust and other hardware mods because its been designed that way.
You can get away with stage 2 maps on some cars like S3 and golf Rs.
You can skip stage one and go straight to stage 2 if you want, it's not about money, a stage 2 flash is the same price as stage 1.

Actually, no you can't.
The s3, golf R and Leon Cupra have a bigger turbo than the GTI. A stage 2 map for them is a lot more aggressive than for a GTI.
Also you really have no clue what you're talking about, honestly. The prices are not the same and no tuner worth his salt will put a map that requires hardware mods on a car that does not have them. If he does you should stay far away.

I know you probably know more than me about this modding stuff, but I'm pretty sure an S3 can take a stage 2 map with no hardware for the same price as a stage 1 map.

From which tuner?

Revo stg2 K04 map - required = decat or highflow cat with 3" downpipe and low-restriction intake.

Revo 1 to 2 increment is R500.

As to the guys who are ridiculing "stages"... did you not think perhaps that the games drew their inspiration from real life?

I'll speak for Revo as I know their products best.

Stock map on the K04 VAG TFSI engine requests about 0.9 bar boost.
Revo produce 2 levels of upgrade for the stock turbo. The first level requests about 1.1 bar, the second level 1.3 bar.
So it makes sense to call the first level upgrade Stage 1. You can do it with no hardware mods.

The second level, well, stage 2 makes sense no?

And since you're now boosting quite a bit higher than stock, your airflow requirements through the engine are a lot higher than stock - and this is why you need a less restrictive intake (to get the air in without stressing the turbo) and to get the exhaust out (without stressing the exhaust manifold and other components).

There's another upgrade (stage 2+) which produces slightly more power but a lot more torque, and for this you need an uprated high-pressure fuel pump.
