Hi all,

How does UIF work?

I've never needed to know, but I've always been curious - can someone explain it to me?

In terms of what you get?

UIF is applicable when and if you are retrenched, only, not when you resign. AFAIK you get about 30% of your previous salary for a period of 6 months.

UIF payment is calculated on your gross income.

Yo,
and to sick to work

1. you pay UIF
2. your Employee pays it over to Guv
3. you get bombed or dumped
4. employer gives you a UI-19 form
5. you take that to DOL , DOL checks if you eligible
6. if eligible they give you forms and one bank must complete
7. you go back and park in a que for aeons, they process you
8. you go sign a month later to prove you still out the game
9. eight days later you get 10% deposited in account
10 goto to #8 for until employed or funds depleted (6months)

The b0ll0x kicks in when.
1. you b0ss'tid/company is slimy and they dont pay over UIF (tough luck, u get nada)
2. you contributed for less that 4 years (good luck again) even worse if it is a year

REM the higher you up the salary scale the lower the percentage.
If you work for a small company, please please check that your boss is paying the contributions with DOL
Both my wife and I had k@k experiences with ex companies and their filthy slimy long fingers

Hope makes sense....

I also had to...um...chat...with a exboss of my wife who argued "I don't need to pay her UIF because I'm never going to close the business."

Basically what InterGalacticSpook said.

The amount you get paid is pretty small though. If you were receiving a decent salary don't expect UIF to be more than a pittance in comparison.

And it's illegal for your employer not to pay UIF. If they're not doing it report them.

Speaking about UIF, i got my uif last month, after a long process and only got R4500, i thought i will get double.

is it really 30%?
i thought its 70% with a max of R12500

Is there anyway I could check that my company is paying my UIF?

I mean, If I was to ask, or anyone had to ask, I'm sure they'd say "yes" but could I do a 'behind the scenes' check?
I don't think my current employer wouldn't be paying, but I just like to make sure.

I pay for UIF contribution of R12.80 every month even though I get a goverment social pension.

I would rather not pay it and put that in a savings account cause chances of getting retrenched or pregnant is 0 here lol.

Is there anyway to cancel it or is there a point in paying it? I only work 1 day a week

It should be on your payslip.

It should be on your payslip.
Fair enough, but does not mean you company is paying it over !

You can go to DOL`Department of Labour ` when i tried to report previous employer the brother at DOL look at me as though i had headlights on.
When i told previous workmates what was cutting and they queried him, he said prove it, effing kn0b!

Basically it doesn't work. You pay a contribution every month and than never see it again.
From my experience it does work.

People who loose out on what little they can get back from the system are usually screwed over by their employers pocketing their contributions.
If you lost your job and cant be bothered to make an effort to claim then tough, you effing lazy and need to sit at home moping.

after twelve years of loyal service my wife went to claim UIF as she was preggies: no luck, employer held back
a month after she got back to work they retrenched her : screwed again

can some one tell me ,how much UIF can a person who earns about 20k a month get?
