I also pirate less - actually not pirating anything at the moment - but not a cent of my entertainment spend goes to MultiChoice.

Must say, I don't get the hate for DSTV. It's premium subscription is the price of one PS4 game - there is no comparing the content you receive.

Go other (legal) routes if you want to and have the internet speed - I don't.

Although, it seems to me that this "hate" is just a convenient excuse for (some) to pirate.

They do actually. Its part of a bigger problem with these large satellite based media companies, DSTV own all the rights to the sport (and most of the movies and TV shows), they have the money to own all that content and they have pushed the price up so that its not attainable for anyone else.

Then they charge us a premium to access that content and tell us that it was really expensive for them to buy those rights.
That's exactly why a monopoly sucks.

Just to demonstrate, the broadcast rights for ICC cricket have gone up from $50 mil to $1 bil in the last 10 years.

...AND there is less cricket. The satellite media companies like DSTV are creating this bubble.


EDIT: its the exact same situation in Australia, have a look at Ozzymans rants on YouTube and The Gentleman's Game doc on Netflix.

so? I am against monopolies.
I want to have choice in what I do. I want to know that when I use something I am using the best possible option.

and why would you pay for something when you can get it for free? because the makers of the content suffer?
please by the time we watch the series/movie everyone inolvolved have already been paid.
the only people who loose out on a bit of money is the studio, and they still make WAY more because that dude drank a coke in that scene of the movie.

same goes for music. if I feel strongly about supporting the artist, I will buy the album. in the last 10 years that has happened a grand total of 5 times.
I have bought many older albums in the last 10 years however.

my little rebellion is not making a big dent, and if 100 people cancel DSTV today it will not be out of the ordinary.
 
I watch what I like when I like and there are no cr@p adverts or DSTV informative adds it's just enjoyable watching without being raped by a anc cadre movement.

For the forum members who are open to reason and facts:

1. If there is a problem with any article, I take responsibility for it. If the problem is "I disagree with what you say because of my opinion", that's a different story.
2. Dave is a real person, and did not want to use his full name for fear of being pursued for pirating content.
3. The article is a normal news article. No one was paid anything - money, incentives, or otherwise.
4. I don't know why tv is in small caps.

Ok, so what about the issue of obvious "click-bait" and poorly "written for the sake of content" articles?

Members continually express their disgust at them yet no reply from the author or myBB staff ever materializes, yet all it takes is accusations of shill-like behaviour on a very transparent article to illicit a response?

Sharing isn't always stealing. Show me a case were someone was found guilty of breaking copyright laws by only sharing content in a non commercial way. I dont pay anyone

I think it is important to note this. I too am not pirating as I am using paid for alternatives. And also have been so much happier since I cancelled DSTV 2+ years ago.

MyBB do respond. Generally with sarcasm and a ****-you attitude, just like earlier in this thread.


My 2c - this reads like an advertorial. If it was not paid for somehow, then MyBB is acting like an extremely cheap whore ;)

Like I said, the monopoly thing is just used as an excuse to pirate...

But hey - maybe you will convince me and everyone else. then we will all pirate, and watch all those lovely new shows made for free!!!!
