How DStv will work on your fibre connection

OK - what about Redundancy & Fail over??

I can just imagine an entire complex going down while watching Isidingo :p the horror
 
Smart Village (GTS) tried to do exactly this over their co-axial network about 15 years ago.

It was a disaster, because they could never get the two signals not to interfere with one another.

Should work much better over fibre though.
 
Will this be like cable TV they have in the US or us this different?
 
I think this will only work for some fibre installations. As an example:
Vumatel has deployed in our area, including complexes. Where they deployed in complexes, each unit has it's own fibre line that runs all the way to a street cabinet, often some distance away, my line runs almost 750m. I'm not saying this is the case everywhere, but it is for where we live.
The street cabinet is shared with an entire deployment phase, including other complexes and standalone houses.
 
It is meant for complex's as dstv is turning on another satellite next year for more channels and higher HD content. You would need 5 coaxial cables which is impossible, hence this migration.

Basically the fibre connects to a splitter or such in the risers and then into the dstv head-end equipment such as ode's and odu's. A fibre cable goes up to the dstv dish and onto a fibre lnb.

Then in your flat the fibre would go into a gtu, which basically converts the signals back to co-axial and then into a smart switch, back to the decoder.

It is expensive for every home though, around 2 grand or more, excluding the head-end equipment for the building.
 
Smart Village, which Multichoice sold to MTN, already has FTTH in various gated communities. DSTv signals are propagated from a "single" dish to homes using this fibre. In some respects, they just need to reconfigure their switching environment to remove sharing of internet/data with other internet applications. I assume this means virtual separation of traffic in their switches, or using dedicated interface on the switches, or a new switches altogether just for DSTV.
 
The new satellite is already turned on but with limited number of transponders activated. What is supposed to happen next year is to activate more transponders which requires both hi-band vertical and horizontal activated.

But all of this has nothing to do with the principal of using fibre technology to simplify the connection between the antenna and the decoder locations.
In complexes and high rise buildings these feeds have been a real problem for quite a while already. The solution is to find a way to still allow a standard decoder used in single residential applications work over a single cable distribution.
Existing coaxial solutions have become expensive and difficult to maintain hence the move to fibre.

No this not in the least similar to cable TV overseas, which SA thank goodness never deployed.
The solution on offer at the moment by MC is aimed at MUDS but is equally deployable in the home situation. All that must happen is for you to get the right equipment.

I want 21 Grand Prix channels. One per car and one for the pit lane. I want to be able to switch up and down the grid during the race... being able to pan left and right would be nice too, but not absolutely required. K thanx.
 
best move ive made in years was cutting myself free from DSTV.... cant believe how long episodes on NETFLIX are with no adverts..
 
So now you can spend R100's of Rands on data for adverts and repeats..........

This is what is so unbelievably annoying about both the articles (press releases) that Multichoice pushed out on this subject. They are so badly drafted that many are completely misinterpreting what they are talking about. For a company that was once recognized all over the World for being a leading innovative broadcasting operation it is not at all good enough.

they can hardly let you pan the volume up and down properly :D

Yup.

And it’s a very specific fibre connection at that, not just any fibre connection as it sounds at first.
