How is Telkom Mobile doing?

I'm currently using Vodacom and my contract is ending soon and I can already upgrade but I feel Vodacom is ripping me off currently. I've taken a look at Telkoms Freeme deals and they look like they are good value for money.

For those of you that are currently using Telkom Mobile in your daily cellphone (Jhb), how is the experience for you? Would you recommend moving over? I'm currently looking at the Freeme package for R149 with 2GB data. Don't need more than that as I have decent wifi at work and home.

As long as you force your handset to use the MTN backbone...

Telkom's coverage is flaky at best. MTN on the other hand... and they sharing infrastructure so... you wont get LTE speeds though.

Not exactly.

You want to set your Network to Auto with roaming enabled, and hopefully your particular handset will switch between networks without too many issues (mentioning this as some phones seem to not manage roaming very well and sometimes end up in a limbo state where you have to either reset the phone or search for network).

Just note that the handover between MTN and Telkom is a hard handover i.e. you will drop the call if you move between the networks. But saying that, I suspect its becoming less of an issue as people are making less traditional voice calls.

In essence, you get the best of both networks.

Highly recommended. Almost worth worth alone just for the their facilities to avoid the oob shark.

Once your data bundle has depleted they pause your data and ask you if you want to go oob or buy a new data bundle.

I would suggest you get a Telkom Prepaid Sim and test for yourself, on my side I don't have complaints, I have been on Telkom for around 5 years now, with no issues, where they don't have network I roam on MTN, and in GP most places Telkom have a very good network.

I would seriously consider telkom mobile and moreso the freeme plans. Those are serious value for money.
