How long can a router be left on ?

ok, now plz forgive this n00b question, but i'm new to the DSL scene (be gentle) :D

can i leave my router on 24/7/365 ? Its an MWeb Billion 7401 VGP
 
Yes, you can leave it on indefinitely!

Would be best if you bought it a surge protector (for network, line and power)... or even better get a UPS for it. A UPS will keep it running for at least 20 mins when the power goes out. Giving you plenty of time to finish what you are doing.
 
With a 500VA or 600VA, you should be able to get a fair amount more than 20 min.

My router is on 24/7/365

cool, i've got almost everything setup, as i have the surge protector plugs, as well as a 1KVA UPS with built in surge protection. but i'm running my 32" LCD + PS3 + Xbox 360 + will soon as the router to this UPS. just need telskum to install that jackpoint near my setup and i'll be sorted :D

Surge protector will not save your PC from a close/direct strike. Got 2 PC and one fax fried earlier this year, all plugged into surge protectors.

You can run the router as long as until the next load shedding/Lightning strike.
 
Have to agree with cyberarmy - lightning destroyed my first router before its first birthday. I no longer leave mine on and unplug it every time it rains.
 
I would say that you couldn't leave it on for more than a week at a time with the way that Eskom is shedding us :P

If there is a constant supply of power, there shouldn't be much reason to restart it and it can run pretty much as long as you want it.
 
Unless the router is in a very inconvenient place, I'd unplug the phone line from the router when a storm approaches.
 
I always unplug my router when I switch off my pc, or when a storm approaches...

Heh, free Telkom router ftw. It can fry for all I care.

Never has, mind you. Although they're prone enough to breakage without lightning.
 
I am on my 7 or 8th router in 4 years. And I diligently unplug it when the weather gets nasty.
Problem is, sometimes it is blue sky *here*, and the approach of the four horsemen "just over the hill"....

I'm on my 3rd ADSL modem since I got DSL in 2005 (live in the West Rand on a hill in Wilro Park/Helderkruin and lightning loves this place), but I lost about 10 U.S. Robotics 56k faxmodems from about 2003 to 2005. They're very expensive and extremely sensitive to lightning, but at the time they were by far the best 56k modem, i often got pings below 100ms with them and proper 6-7KB/s (in contrast, a 56k conexant internal modem got me minimum 180ms ping and like 2-4KB/s) so you can understand why I kept buying them after they got fried...
