Three weeks ago our accountant walked into the local Telkom Direct shop and asked about their contract offerings.

The lady who assisted her said that there was a bit of a backlog due to te Christmas rush, gave her the forms and said that our phones would be ready on Friday 4 January 2013.

On the Friday in question, the account went in armed with everything that was required.

No not good enough, the bank statements need to be taken to the bank to be stamped.

This done, we were told that the account has been opened and it needs to be signed off by the manager.

At this point in time I suppose I should point out that we are Pinnacle clients of Telkom. A lot of money changes hands between us and them every month.

The accountant returned on the Monday, only to be told that the manager had not yet signed off on the account.

On Tuesday 8 January 2012 we all got SMSs saying "Heita! Your port-in validation PIN is..."

Shortly after that the Telkom lady called, asking for the PINs.

The Wednesday (that would be 9 January 2013) when the accountant walked into the Telkom shop to go and get our phones, she was told that everything had been forwarded to ITC and that we must wait.

Today is 15 January 2013. This afternoon, the account was told to go away, yet again. "Still nothing".

Is this normal?

Why are they porting our number when they haven't opened the accounts properly yet?

Why do they first open accounts, then do a credit check?

Why do Telkom's credit checks take so long? We do ours on line. They are quick.

Are we being conned here?

Weird. I went into the store the morning and I was called the afternoon to collect my contract phone.

Depends on the store/ consultant I guess.

depends on the person assisting you, it helps to want the name of the manager and follow up with them if you don't find joy from operational people

It only took me 20 minutes to get my contract done. But it was for sim only contract with data. I am not sure if there is difference between sim only contract and contract with phone.

It's the beginning of another week and not even MyBroadband user 8ta can get their shop to reply to queries.

Hi

We did PM you

We do apologise about the delay.

Thank you
8ta

Another week goes past and still nothing.

The 8ta guys on here have done a great job. They are liaising with everyone and doing their best to keep us in the loop.

Unfortunately, the shop in Somerset West feels nothing and just ignores everyone. We've escalated this to a point where we can't really escalate it any further.

So much for 8ta.

I have an update!

Unknown to me, our accountant was down at the Telkom Direct Shop, Main Rd, Somerset West this morning. She just arrived at the office and gave us the good news that our order was cancelled "because it was taking too long". The lady in the shop then had the temerity to ask her if we wanted to apply again.

We didn't cancel the order. This raises the question: Who cancelled the order?

Does this mean that 8ta / Telkom Business cancel their own orders because they can't be bothered to fulfill them?

So, if there are any cellphone networks who want to take over a business account with 19 sim cards, please be in touch. There's money to be made here by somebody who's awake.

Contracts are so 2000's, when changes are so fast and fluid in the mobile market these days. And South Africa apparently shares the title of the world's largest prepaid market with Brazil, according to a recent article. Beats me why anyone would still want to lock themselves into a two-year contract when a better prepaid deal may be just around the corner....
