I've read the previous posts and feel there may be some benefit to my particular tale:
Last Sat (2nd Sept) I ordered an upgrade from 512kbps to 1024kbps. Was told Telkom couldn't verify if it was possible, but I could place a free upgrade and would either automatically be bumped to the faster speed or left on 512kbps. This could take the standard 7 days turnaround.
Got home from work on Monday night (4th Sept) and was getting 3784kbps downlink speed - didn't have to change a thing on my side. Played EQ, downloaded latest nVidia Graphics Drivers, ran repeated Telkom speedtests and went to sleep happy.
Got home Tuesday night (5th Sept) only to find no data connectivity -> voice only. Router was synchronising at 1154kbps down / 384kbps up. Called ADSL support after trying to re-establish unsuccessful connection on my side. Was told that someone downgraded my ADSL line to 384kbps that day and the reason I couldn't use data was because the friggin Telkom server needed to verify my line. I think they did that manually while I was on hold with them because about 30 min after I spoke to Telkom, I could surf the net again, but this time I could only connect at 384kbps down / 128kbps up.
I have personally heard of good stories about Telkom service in Pretoria, but 80% of my experience with the JHB West Rand section have been delays, incorrect installations, slow fault repairs etc.
Basically, depending on which Telkom section services your area, you could wait several hours, to several days, and even have your linespeed dropped to less than what you had before the "upgrade".
Luckily I was able to complain and get Telkom to drop my account to the 384kbps package without charging me for the downgrade. I still have to confirm this with Telkom accounts tomorrow - but I may as well save some money and switch to Neotel as soon as it's viable to do so. No need giving Telkom more of my cash with the poor service they're giving me.
