How long to wait for Number Plates

What is the average waiting period for the dealer to affix number plates to your new vehicle. I have been waiting 2 weeks now, and am wondering if I should start getting annoyed, or if this is the norm.
 
From the few cars I've bought the dealers have never taken more than 2 days.
 
Are you sure that all of your paperwork is spot on?

If it's a dealer, and he sold you the car before he could Dealer stock it, they might have had to wait for the Natis docs to arrive from the bank first - there is two weeks on its own.

Your temp plates last 21 days, so you have a whole week before you need to panic.. ;)
 
depends on the dealer. I'm going to go with "2nd hand dealer" here, and not an actual dealership. I had to wait more or less that amount of time. That is why you get temporary plates
 
It was in the newspaper yesterday that Tshwanetoria has no ink for their printers to print registration papers. Some dealers supplied their own just to get the papers done. They have to wait until June for the new financial year before they can buy new ink.

This is for a brand new car that I bought cash. The thing is that they phone me every second day and say it will be ready tomorrow. Tomorrow comes and it is not ready. So I'm just wondering how long it typically takes.

If the dealer is yanking my chain, I'll buy the wife's car elsewhere out of pure principle.
 
Last month, it took 3 working days to get new number plate - great experience with Honda Midrand in this aspect.

bought my car cash also , bought a custom number plate with it.

Car was ready in 6 working days , 3 of it being some rust removal and rest roadworthy , service etc.

What the man in the street doesn't realise is that Dealers have a hell of a problem licensing new cars. The Department limits us to one new car per day ( I kid you not) and the urgent ones ( where you cannot get temp plates for some or other reason) get shoved to the front of the queue. If you have more than one car to licence, then the papers are stacked at the department, and they attend to them when they feel like it.....

I finally licensed a car yesterday on the last day of its 21 day permit, simply because we had been buggered about by the department - so it's not always the dealership or salesman's fault.

Oh it used to be two transactions per Dealer then you get shoved back to the queue.

Which Licensing Department do you deal with just out of curiosity.

These are the rules in Durban - a bloody nightmare! :(

There are days where 5 of us are all fighting to have our cars registered, and the poor licensing clerk has to catch all the flack.

I cannot imagine why though. With so many PO's doing renewals etc it's not like the Licensing Department's are swamped anymore.

In order to jump the queue on an urgent licence the other day, I went and sat in the queue and did one as if I was a private person - still a nightmare. Got there at 8 and left at 11:30.

It's a massive place and swamped with people and incredibly slow cashiers behind the counter ~ ladies who stick to tea breaks, loo breaks and whatever other break they can imagine.

I can imagine. Hopefully they provincialise/nationalise the numbering system so you can do a transaction anywhere. Then the big licensing departments can take their attitude and stick it where the sun don't shine.

Thanks. This makes me feel a lot better, as I was starting to feel that the dealership just did not care anymore after selling the car to me. From your email then it is clear the issue is probably not at the dealership, but rather the traffic dept. I guess all the public holidays did not help either.
