How many people run SSDs?

I'm running SSD in my laptop, everything loads & boots just so much faster but as a developer not much else in terms of improvement.
Recon I would 'feel the difference' much better in my i7/8gb gaming pc.

I had issues with the OCZ Vertex 3 running firmware 2.11. BSOD roughly every 4 days. Downgraded to firmware version 2.09 and have not had a single issue... Windows 7...

The other thing that i forgot to mention is that im going to be running it on sata II ports for the mean time because i dont have a full upgrade planned anytime soon, and i cant afford R500 for a sata III port ontop of the SSD!

You haven't tried the updated 2.15? I take it? Can you change the firmware version without having to do a reinstall of windows?

for FPS gamers there's a ZERO% increase in gaming experience when on SSD
(no matter what they told you before you bought your SSD)
FPS game play experience is dictated by a) latency, b) latency and c) latency.
HDD access & transfer rates mean nothing

I have clients running CAD apps and they LOVE their SSD's. (app loading, swop file, rendering)

But apart from that the whole SSD hype is a bit over-rated IMHO.
So great, my desktop now loads Word, Outlook & Photoshop in 2 seconds.
Whoopie-ding. it saves me like 20-odd seconds a day because the applications only open once, in the morning.

I'm also running it on sata II ports but with a Asus 6gb pci card controller. Made little to now difference on account of bandwidth limitations associated with my MOBO. Maybe go for the Vertex 2. More than ample and save yourself a few bob...

Some games load textures and various game play files during game play and they would actually stop those pesky "hard freeze" moments people experience in games.

Other games load everything for a given area into main memory and the FPS *might* be influenced by the latency of the memory. Anandtech did a test of that effect about 2 years ago. The effect, approx. 2fps or less in most games with the most being around 4fps IIRC.

why would it do that when its loaded in the ram long time ago? Your cpu fetches it out of its caches. But while playing games the data is already in the ram. It doesnt stop then load then stop then load. So hdd access times have absolutely no effect on fps.
A ssd is a boot drive. Speeds up the time a app start not how fast it runs
An SSD will only improve the gaming experience in cases where the data needs to be loaded from the drive. For example when starting a new level,etc. In short, and SSD will NOT improve your frame rates.

Well i would say loading maps faster is an increase in the overall gaming experience.

What about working in those applications? does the ssd offer nothing after the program is open? You mention your clients love the ssd for rendering yet you then say it only opens programs faster.

At the end of the day people can say what they like about ssd's but they make your entire computing experience faster much faster in fact. So whether or not you believe they are over hype the simple fact of the matter is they make everything faster so that is not over hyped that is actually more in area of fact . If a fast computer is over hyped then so be it but there is no upgrade i can think of that has made such a massive difference.

Hmmm actually raptor raid 0 was pretty darn fast as well but nothing like a single ssd.

I recently took the plunge and bought myself one of Corsair's new SSD's. Although only 60GB, the performance impact on my i7/x58 system was not only noticeable, it was remarkable.

For example, I added a shortcut to one of every application in Office 2010 to my startup (just for ****s and giggles) - and it took less than 2 seconds to load them all after logging in.

As I said, some games load textures on the fly. It doesn't happen often but it does happen. Believe it, don't believe it.

The best thing about an SSD is that I can restart/boot my pc into windows to desktop without having to wait for things to load, and all in the short time of < 30sec.

Other than that, its not much, considering I use standby instead of shutdown anyway.
