How Many? The eternal debate

I love the constant acceleration of an auto, as well as the surge of power when the box kicks down. Not much appeals to me about a manual, except an E34 540i 6 speed manual... I'll take one in midnight blue please.
 
We also seem to forget that manual gearboxes have advanced quite a bit.

Look at the rev-matching down shifts in the new M4 and I'm guessing other M BMW's. That's pretty awesome.


In motorcycles even more so with the new top of the line BMW's and Ducati's having quickshifters that can shift both up and down with rev matching and everything. You only really need the clutch to pull away, which is really where everyone wants it for the "feel".
 
Get a car that's fun to drive even if the box is auto. If your fun is limited to stirring a gearbox, you're not REALLY having fun...... ;)

Says the man whose idea of fun is watching the traction control light throw a **** fit instead of turning it off and using all that torque to eat through tyres. :whistle:

I've been there. :o The temptation was strong to turn it off in the drizzle this morning on the way to work, but the crazy sliding I managed at sub-20km/h with it ON made me question physics and decide the constant flashing isn't so bad...

Got caught with an off camber right turn this morning in the grease. Had to counter steer even with esp on. If it had been off I would have been pirouetting.
 
I drive what I can afford. I am used to a manual.

Even my good family friend who is a die hard manual car fan; he has a F20 120d with M Sports Pack & all; said his next car will be a 2-pedal car...

No, mine's got 6 forward and one reverse.
 
Auto all the way. Manual on the way out so will never need to drive one.

The BSA Dandy had an automatic gear change more than 50 years ago.

A version of the Dandy held the record for a lap of our Hostel, until beaten by a Tiger 110 by my room mate.

The two speed box could be pre-selected and you were always ready with the next gear for the slow corner. There is actually very little "New" in automotive engineering, it is just being perfected better these days.
