How much am I worth? Dev salary

Biggest bit of advice I can give you is going to be controversial.

Get yourself a nice luxury vehicle. It turns the 2 hour dredge to work and back into something you look forward to.

Changed the way I think about my work when I got mine. Stopped being tired and frustrated when I got to the office and got home, and positively affected my work ethic and job satisfaction.

Sure, it is expensive and you could put that money to use somewhere else better, but it's a great motivation tool.

YMMV and this is probably particular to my personality type, but it worked for me!

Can definitely +1 this. But this only works if you LOVE driving or if the car is super comfy.
Seeing as you are in DBN. Golf GTI bru!

This is the hard part, I understand freelancing isn't the same as working full time but anything less than 20k wouldn't make financial sense since I roughly make that already.

Then stick with what you are doing?

I know guys with PhD's and MA's who start at WAY less than 20k

I honestly would like the opportunity, the environment looks good. I don't want to be unrealistic about remuneration but at the same time I don't want to be exploited.

Then 25k would be a decent starter. You can still freelance on your own time if you need too right?

Yeah there is some perks like attending .Net conferences //Build etc.
Your idea and my idea of perks are vastly different. Cellphone and internet allowance, half my medical aid paid, 20+ leave days, flexi hours...those are perks.

Well everybody is different
I don't need a cellphone or internet allowance.

I'm still young so paid trips to conferences would be cool.

Are perks still perks these days? I see a lot of companies will advertise posts and say things like.. Medical aid, RA, Group Policy, Cellphone etc as a Perk.. but then it actually comes out of your salary annualised CTC quoted i.e. not a perk.

I think in Sa you get a ctc value and a perk would be on top of that with the tax implications there of handled too. of cause in SA this is rarely done and typically your quoted a ctc and told u get a perk but this perk is contain in the quoted ctc so salary is actually less. :p

For Durban, with your experience I would say no more than R8-12k CTC.

Agreed. Don't forget it's got to be automatic. I changed my mindset from it being time wasted in traffic, to music-listening time in a pleasant environment.

I don't see cellphone allowance as a perk. It's basically handing over consent for them to contact you whenever they please...

Damn straight skippy! My work offers a phone (actual device; not an allowance). I don't take them up on it - my phone is my phone and you get to say buggerall about what I use it for.

Perk as in stuff with a money value. It's not big but it is extra $$$
