How much are you paying per unit?

Assuming that Eskom is your supplier, then you should be recievng the "Inclined Block Tariff" which means that for the first 600 kWh you should be charged R1.08 per kWh and R1.83 for each kWh in excess of 600 KWh.

Who will receive Incline Block Tariff electricity?

The Incline Block tariffs have been implemented for all residential tariffs from Eskom. This means prepayment and conventional customers will have the same block tariffs and pay the same price for electricity.​

Most municipalities have similar inclined block tariffs. They also have similar bylaws with regards to electricty resale.

Section 17 (3) of the Greater Johannesburg Metropolitan Electricity Bylaws, Resale of Electricity:

(3) The charge made by such seller shall not exceed the charge determined by the council which the council itself supplies electricity and every such purchaser shall be entitled to require the seller to furnish such accounts, documents and other information as may be necessary to enable the purchaser to ascertain whether the accounts rendered for electricity supplied are correct.

SECTION 38
Offences and Penalties
(1) Any person contravening or failing to comply with any provision of these by-laws shall be guilty of an offence and shall upon conviction be liable for a fine not exceeding R2 000-00 or, in default of payment, to imprisonment for a period not exceeding six months.​


For Johannesburg, a criminal case can be filed against such a reseller as they are in direct breach of 17(3) of the bylaw. Another criminal case can be filed under the Prevention of Organised Crime Act; as this amounts to racketeering.

I think I pay exactly the same as you. How much you paying per month on average in total. I'm also in a complex.
 
Here in PMBurg pay 81.1 cents per unit and this is after a 12.5% recent increase.

If you staying in a complex and paying a flat-rate then you are being defrauded. You are entitled to a lower rate for the first 500 or 600 units depending whether you are using City Power or Eskom (for Jhb, but same principle applies elsewhere).

This is illegal. City Power of Johannesburg was found by the Johannesburg High Court to engaged in this illegal practice and it wsa ordered it to repay past overcharging and stop the flat-rate practice.

Incorrect sectional title billing lands Joburg in court

Thousands of Joburg sectional title owners are being overcharged for electricity because of the city's failure to bill them at the correct rates.

City Power is charging most sectional title owners and tenants at the highest rate of the stepped rate tariffs for electricity, using their collective usage. The city has a different billing arrangement for complexes to ensure fair play, but many complexes are not getting this.

yoh. Thats hectic. Then again I think most households should be able to stay below 700 if they make an effort.

I would if I could get the monkeycipality to read my meter for a change - only had interim readings for the past 6 months. Problem is once you manage to get the tariff changed, you're stuck for 12 months.
I'm busy installing solar water heating, so hopefully my consumption will drop by the magical 300 units a month and save me R1500 ;)
 
Hey all - I'd like to know if anyone that converted to prepaid has seen a reduction in their monthly electricity costs and if so what are the numbers?

As you've seen from above it can get wildly expensive. The only real cost saving comes from you using less as you are more aware of what you use.

Per KWH it's more expensive.
