Kompete: cap limit isn't the issue here, the wholesale pricing structure is. MyADSL and many others in the IT industry have stood in front of ICASA and presented our arguments. They have proved that they are absolutely useless. The ONLY way to sort this out is via an open market - let competition take it's course. It's unfair to assume that everybody with a high cap requirement is downloading illegal stuff via p2p.

Try this: spend a few hours browsing through videos on youtube, listening to streaming radio stations, going through sites like hi5 and myspace, get a copy of Vista Beta or RC1, add in a few linux distro's and buy some downloadable software online. Let me know how much data that consumes ;)

hmmm...finally some food for thought. I know i was unfair to make broad generalisations, but it was mainly to tick off the dunces...u know who u r

And yes, I finally doscovered the true power of broadband, which is why my 1 GB account is proving to be waaaaay to little...and I promise I only use it for legal stuff ;)

So if you are an ordinary home user (not running a business from home) what are you downloading to reach 170 gigs a month.
Try joining an online band - sending instrumental tracks to each other for collaboration chows bandwidth like crazy... much more than the average pornsite browser uses...
http://www.artistcollaboration.com/
...and it's not business use either - MEGA educational and entertainment!
What we use our data for is neither yours nor ICASA's business. We pay for it, we use it as we see fit. The point is the price of this data and bandwidth is way beyond what we should be paying.
As long as some fatcats can fill their pockets, the rip-off will continue

Just enjoy your broadband more. A broadband connection is life changing in the right hands, or be that socket... :D

Home user downloading 70Gb of MP3s a month approx. Not talking ***! :p

Now this sounds liek ****, do you know how much music 70GBof mp3 is? Its more than you can listen to in a month if you listened 24/7, infacts its much more than you could listen to in two months, so what is the point?

I think he's kidding, he has a tendency of being sarcastic. Even caught me out once during one of the religious debates :D

Me? So you really think 70gigs of Mp3 per month is what we need higher caps for?

My only point is that you guys try and stand behind legal uses and this and that (business barred) but about 90% of the high cap users will be using their caps almost exclusively on illegal content, and probably much more of it than they will ever need or watch/listen to. This you cant deny, you might say, okay well so what my cap etc etc. But that isnt gong to get you anywhere in getting us high usage for those who need it.

EDIT: Ag fine I'll leave it.
and my MP3 collection is just over 30gb, not too bad but I only listen to metal, otherwise it would be around 60GB. Dont think I dont want higher caps.
Oh and NoRulex, I am also an amateur musician of sorts, and im wondering how mcuh BW can sending racks realy take, I mean you record in WAV shure but shurley you convert that to MP3 before sending it over the net, then how many tracks do you send/download it cant use much more than a gig a month.

Well personally (excluding whatever I do at work)... i use roughly 1gb a month... and all I know is its nowhere near enough... i am ALWAYS having to stop myself clicking on some link or doing something cos it'll chew more than I can spare.....

I would be comfortable with about 30gb a month... that should realistically be fine for most home users to enjoy the full benefits of the net i think.....
granted I'd like 100+gb per month... but i know that will NEVER happen with telkom in the driving seat...

...the same people that want to use that bandwidth to download 70Gig of...well lets just say you're not going to use it to complete your doctorate...:p

Nothing illegal about downloading MP3s. Who are you to judge what I want to download anyway? Get your facts straight mate.

As said above, nothing illegal about downloading MP3s. In any event I am uncapped, and pay for that privilege. I was giving an honest answer to a question about what I download - rather than the usual bull about Linux ISOs. Those who want higher usage can pay for it, as I do.

70 GIGS of Music?????????? Im sorry thats talking **** ! Look at a standard torrented album these days. Its 100 mbytes. Are you trying to tell me you are basically dl 700 albums a month. What,do you work for EMI records or something....

The question as to what you mega downloaders are downloading has been asked multiply times in this thread, but only one reply!

So if you are an ordinary home user (not running a business from home) what are you downloading to reach 170 gigs a month.

I think you are all talking *** when you say you use that much (I am speaking to home users only).

FULLY agreed.some people download CRAP not because they want it or need it,they just download CRAP because they can.theyl go and sit on
illegal torrent sites and find the latest 700 mbyte rips and say 'mmm il get that'.I think 10 gigs will easily be enough for anyone who ENJOYS downloading from time to time but doesnt go MENTAL like some  170 gigs a month???? Do you sleep? Do u have Terabyte hardrives? Where do you find time to sort all the crap you download? Yes 3 gigs is NOT enough.

I guarantee if Telkom UPGRADED the 3 gigs to 10 gigs most of the mental torrenters would be moaning still.....and wont stop.

Oh, yes well ofcourse you can buy MP3's but I was assuming that 70gigs would have obviously been downloaded. It would cost thousands to download that many CD's legally and just in one month, do you really buy al of that music?

Well if you are uncapped, you might as well download all you want, I know I would. :D
