A study should be done to determine what a realistic minimum cap should be aswell. Streaming video is everywhere now. I have a 5 gig account with Afrihost, but due to the R14.50 special they have running almost all the time, I end up buying about 10gig(get 20) extra, and I fly through it quite quiclky, but 20-30gig I find is quite adequate for me.

Realistically, people will adjust their bandwidth needs according to what they can reasonably afford. It's really as simple as that.

about 1 Terabyte a month... to start with! :D

South Africans have learned to starve themselves of Web Content. But if one fully embraces everything that is on offer on the Internet, it would be quite easy to chew through hundreds of Gigs a month. Pretty much everybody else in the world gets that for free at insanely high speeds, so why should we limit ourselves?

Free e-books, free audio books, public domain movies, streamed content, super hi-def photography, online Backup facilities, Online Collaboration, CCTV over IP, Broadcast TV over IP etc. There are hundreds of applications that can chew through a terabyte a month quite easily.

How long is a piece of string?

Although 1Gbps for all and sundry would be great, the vast majority of people would either have no idea of the potential, or no interest.

Example. My 69 year old dad lives in Rhyl, North Wales ... he has a 8Mbps, uncapped line. What does he use it for? e-mail and yahoo messenger. :p He doesn't even read the news online. (I can't really remember, but think it cost him about GBP 8 per month)

I, on the other hand would kill for 8Mbps uncapped

50 gig should be a reasonable cap.

Provided you have the proper line to go with it. Working full day and trying to burn 50gb per month on a 384kbps line is bleh. At this stage I would rather have faster internet than more. And by more I mean a 20gb cap would be enough.

Yea, the mobile operators sure do offer something more usable: 7.2Mb/s.
BUT - @ 19c a MB, the 4GB streamed HD movie will cost R778.24 to watch the move, making it the most expensive HD movie in the world, and hardly a usable nor practical service.
(19c a MB * 1024 = R194.56 a GB * 4 = R778.24)

Makes me wonder why on earth they spend so much money on upgrading speeds, while keeping data costs so high that actually using the service provided would be stupid financially for the customer.
I suppose they're counting on having access to a lot of really stupid customers, and have designed their contracts and their data products with that in mind.

Should be 4mb by the end of the month..
I propose a second poll under the first one: What would you prefer your downlink speed to be? 1-5mb, 6-10mb, 11-20mb, More, ALLOT MORE!

was at a friends place in hk recently, he had a 100mbps connection for about R150 a month and signing a contract gave him a free cellphone as a gift... i felt so sad i had to come back to cape town... i remember downloading the latest version of itunes in 10 seconds or so... its only a dream now that im in SA...

Welcome to your nightmare! hehe

Reality is that only 2GB bundles are only available and someone is sure to get caught out with going out of bundle, so your the sums would be (0.19 x 1024 x 2) + (1.2 x 1024 x 2) = R2847 for an HD movie

This has got nothing to do with cap but has to do with your physical bandwidth. What I don't understand is why people are not complaining about their upload speed. Its shocking compared to the download link!
