Hi everyone.
Decided to upgrade my ADSL and use the internet instead of DSTV.
Before I do, i would like to ask a few questions before getting into something i know nothing about :p

How much data would be enough to stream 720p 24/7?
What bandwidth speed is fine without buffering and all that...
And for anyone who already does this.. how has this been so far?

Any help is appreciated:D

To save yourself the hassle of worrying about data usage; rather get an uncapped account. ;)

Well 24/7 isn't realistic - Netflix uses about 2.3GB an hour, I'd imagine you need at least a 4mb line (because that's what I have too maintain at least 720). This means, you could use up to 55GB a day. Over a month, thats just over 1.7 TB of data. Not gonna happen.

2 main Netflix users and that barely clocks 400gb monthly with maybe ~10h combined a day.

Thanks for replies, of course not 24/7, was just curious;)
How much data for streaming 6hrs a day @ 720p?

I want to get 4mb line(telkom)
and 4mb premium uncapped(mweb)
Should have 400gb a month before throttling....

I used 100GB a month on my 1MBps(premium uncapped)
So is 300GB for 6hrs a day @ 720p enough??

I will highly advise you do not go to Mweb....

I don't want another unhappy formatee

Go to a real proper honest none sketch none shark ISP

My recommendation will be

Vox - if you have the money
Web Africa if you want in between, their support is idiotic thou.
Afrihost if you believe in second changes.

Afrihost do the uncapped after hours thing now I see which offers value, provided their Internet works...

Mweb worked fine most of the time.. since im already with them, might as well stay there.
Will change if i run into problems, but thanks for advice:)

So for now is 300GB for 6hrs a day @ 720p enough??
And 4mbps for streaming 720p fast enough??

First one says max speed in area = 4mbps
Second one says i can upgrade..

does it mean i can get faster than 4mbps??

Well, we've already told you what Netflix uses per hour on average. So, do a little math and you will have your answer. ;)

Already did;)

but what about showmax?

And is netflix in SA or do people still use vpn/proxy?

Then why ask questions you already have the answers to?

Its streaming video @ 720p. The source is a little irrelevant; data used will be roughly the same between all VoD providers. As to your last question, I prefer the US catalogue as it offers a greater selection.

Ok thanks for all replies, so if you could choose...
would you take DSTV(repeats everything a 1000 times a day + 100's of useless chanels..)
or
High speed internet(many different places to stream/watch tv)
Also should i get netflix or use showmax??

Not sure if 4mbps is enough for 720p... thats all i need to know before cancelling DSTV.
Last question, is there anything else i should know before i do this??

Ditch DSTV. Get a 4mbps ADSL line. Setup Netflix / ShowMax - also if you use a DNS unblock (e.g., Unotelly) you can also get BBC's iPlayer for extra channels. The 4mbps should be just fine.

For you to use 2.3GB an hour you would have to stream 1080p constantly. And you would need much more then a 4mb line to do it, min 10-12mb line. I stream netfilx on a 4mb capped afrihost account, uses about 2.6GB for about 4 hours of streaming and 10GB for about 6 to 12 hours streaming, depending on what I watch.

Lies, I get 1080 constantly on a 4mb line with crystalweb, get a trial account, see for yourself
