Anyway, my average monthly usage, for a family of four, is in excess of 500kwh.

The more control boils down to that you can't get one of those surprise 50k bills that the city will insist is not an error, and you must just pay up. Issues like that can take years to resolve.

You can also detect issues early, if some broken appliance is sucking power, instead of only finding out once you get the bill.

Prepaid prevents that. In my mind that's the main advantage, it's pretty inconvenient otherwise.

If you going part solar keep it it mind to go prepaid - trust me that 60 bucks will help and depending if you can keep usage below the lower IBT in summer

Post paid out of sight out of mind , you only see the impact when you get your bill , prepaid its in your face you can see the impact immediately, so you can change behavior at home and see the savings almost immediately

of course even prepaid some people will still not look and stick to blaming eskom / municipality for high usage

you can often silence the beeping instead of unplugging it

So they as a member of the Body cooperate should explain all this to you by checking the minutes of the meetings if they didn't attend (even if they didn't ow then they are well within their rights to get this) and if they did attend well they were part of the vote

yup it takes a bit of time to sync with the meter outside after being switched off - the more interference the longer it will take

My younger brother is renting in Pretoria and his landlord owed money to the muni (the house is on prepaid and my brother is renting a garden cottage with its own prepaid meter also but obviously being supplies from the house meter). He has had no power since Friday as any units the landlord buys are going straight to whatever debt he owes.

Definitely puts a renter in a bad situation if the landlord is in such a situation. The landlords problem becomes the renters problem.

When local companies complain that electricity is too expensive. I think they should stop blaming electric prices and check why they aren't profitable in the first place.

Residential rates though, we are getting into the most expensive club now since this is before the double digit increases.

Eskom direct homepower standard @ R2.6878 kWh excl. vat.

In Apr of this year the billing structure changed drastically to be less focused on consumption with more built-in fees.

Another FU to the people with solar.

Yes in Cape Town these direct with Eskom b.s. fixed fees are about R650 per month opening a consideration of going totally off grid or one is not gaining the benefit of Solar.
