I park underground or the most remote parking bay available to get in more steps. So usually nothing

They render no service to me nor do I want them around. To me it is nothing but 'organised begging'. They get totally ignored, so not a cent from me: they are just a nuisance.

I don't tip. After mom & bro had cars stolen and all car guards each time claimed they didn't see anything, it was the last straw.
Why should I tip them when they are crap at their job...

Don't you guys prefer them in a structured setup rather than adding to those roaming the streets?

I only tip if they actually add value, which is once or twice a year.

As I suffer from recurring carpal tunnel, I appreciate the help I get to load items into my car. Even something as simple as a grocery bag can be painful when my CP flares up.

I'm a creature of habit and shop sat the same stores where the same car guards know me, and how much I tip.

And TBH most shopping centers who has car gaurds actually employ them. The get a salary to watch cars

who told you they dont go Burgling or Robbing afterwards,

I mean even Gangsters have "day jobs"
and this is easy to get and lets them partake in some thievery afterwards.

But the idiot who parks right next to me will still do the honors of scratching my car.

... and the car guard will appear out of nowhere, spit on his fingers and rub them hard over the gouge, smearing any particles of dust into the paintwork

Earlier, I used to be that guy who would rarely pay attendants. Post-covid, I pay at least R5 as times are way too harder on these people. R10-15 for petrol attendants.

I feel bad for them but not enough to tip for no reason except them walking with you JUST for a tip

This. I wish more mall owners would realise that they are losing customers by allowing car guards to operate on their premises. Car guards offer no value whatsoever. They do not guard your car, no one needs their help to reverse out of a parking spot, and I can push my own damn trolley, thank you very much.

You'd do well to avoid some malls, like Clearwater and Cresta, who have car washers  . They're even worse than car guards.

The centres probably think they're creating jobs.

Honestly, I don't mind giving them around R5+ should they actually help. The ones around Builders Warehouse here help you carry, load and all sorts if need be. They are employed by the shop though, so it's more like saying thanks.

But there have been so many here in Glenwood that just demand money for doing nothing, had one guy point at open parking, but it had a bloody trolly in the middle of it
