How much do you tip parking attendants?

I feel bad that they are worse off then me financially, so dont mind giving them some coins. Regardless if they are helpful or not

No criminal in their right mind will steal my car...so no real need for a car guard

If I go to a shopping centre I go to the paid parking. Tipping at that point is double dipping.

But at the local PnP, tipping everyday would bankrupt me. Once or twice a month I may give a little extra to the regularly car guards

had some "car guard" at a local spar getting really pushy with me for tips, before I even entered the store, told him to back off. Told the manager these guards really need to stop pushing people for tips so hard (they tried intimidating my wife into tips, slapped the car cause she refused etc).

Managet tells me, "They are not guards, they just keep pitching up then get chased away several times every day" he then proceeds to start shouting at them till they leave the parking

But yea, the actual security guards walk around all day chasing these guys out of the parking lot.

I usually always give them R2 but when I don't have any R2 coins, give R5. Some of them are down to earth guys and others literally extort you.

Had the opportunity to see the stats on the car guards where I live because they had to become formalized.
50% were convicted criminals and the rest probably just got away with it so far.
They will bullshit the tourists into giving them lots of money and basically extort the locals with the threat of car damage. Yes that absolutely does happen.
Anyone who gives them money is basically paying criminals to hang out wherever we want to be and giving them money to harass and extort us too.
I avoid anywhere with 'car guards' unless there is no alternative.

Since I actually learned to park and I am not incapable of transporting or packing my own shopping they're simply an irritating hazard I have to navigate around. Strictly speaking they should be paying me. Particularly as all that handwaving is itself a distraction and they get in the way when I am exiting a parking bay.

If they are in the vicinity of my car when I come out, and not across the parking area somewhere else, I will give them whatever change I have, which can be anything from 10 - 50 Rands

Nothing. It annoys my wife as she always tips. So it depends on who is driving.

I normally do because I just feel really bad getting into my expensive car and they can hardly feed their child. I've rumours some of them barely eat to take money home.

That said, i've noticed since COVID they're getting a bit agro. In fact one harassed a staff member a few weeks ago when we left a restaurant in the morning after breakfast. She kept saying she doesn't have anything to give him and he kept pulling back her door so she couldn't close it.

Same one then gets me every time I go shopping and says "I want cake! you bring cake because you have nice car!" lol

Well i've long wished they could wear a neck strap with a large QR code so if I want to tip I can just quickly point my phone and done. I either don't have cash or have big notes and if I really feel bad i've had to part with a R50 cause there was no change. But usually I just don't have cash.

Truth be told there may be centres here in PE that have both but I haven't come across them. Some have them in the free parking areas but they're not allowed in the pay areas.

As a rule I don't tip them.. I am able to parking without their assistance, and I have insurance.

There are exceptions very occasionally when they are actually helpful but that is few and far between.

Mate of mine keeps a bag of apples or oranges in the car for the 'guards'...
They dont bother him too much these days....
