Don’t carry cash really so zero.

Being on a motorcycle most of the time they don’t even approach, but even when in the car it’s not a service I asked for or need so why should I pay for it.

Much like @bwana though it will be part of my selection criteria in choosing where to go.

The exception to this in the last two decades was buying appliances at Makro and the car guard actually helping me load them into the car.

This. I avoid places with car guards as much as possible. Luckily most centers around me have no car guards.

On the rare occasion I do get caught, I'll tip 5 or 10 bucks if I have it, which is almost never, because I seldom carry cash.

If you followed my posts you will know that I do not go to restaurants. More of a financial preference but also a hygiene aspect to it as well.
 
I try to avoid places with car guards. My closest center has private paid security and 'car guards' aren't allowed.
 
I'm a remote worker and don't get out much. When I do go out I don't mind tipping car guards. How much I tip will depend.

If the oke is homeless and friendly and doesn't look like a tik kop, 10 bucks since that will get him most of the way to a loaf of bread. If he's homeless and a chop and looks like a druggie, then nothing.

If he's a formal car guard and he's a regular where I shop, I'll tip R20 so he's guaranteed and extra loaf of bread for his family.

This has led me to becoming something akin to royalty at my local shopping center as most of the car guards will say hi and check in how I'm doing even if I'm not parked in their section. And no, I'm not worried about them trying to kidnap me. They see the pos I drive and know I'm not loaded.
 
I earned R2 as a car guard once.

I was on my way home from work, when my wife called me and said she was at Pick n Pay (the one across the road from the Kolonnade shopping centre in Pretoria), and that I should come and help her.

I met her in the store, we finished shopping, and I pushed the trolley to her car. I loaded the groceries in the boot and my wife pulled out of the parking and drove away. The guy who parked next to her, also pulled out of his parking, and I waited for him to get out before pushing the trolley away. As he passed me, he rolled his window down, his arm came out and he dropped a R2 coin in my hand and drove away.

I don't think I declared that income to SARS.

The incident did prompt me to upgrade my wardrobe, though...
 
I tip, and I tip what I have. I feel R2 isn't enough, and sometimes I will give up to R20.

Why?

I had a colleague who got retrenched. He had a wife and two kids. Not only were we colleagues, we were neighbors. He couldn't find a job after being retrenched, and he eventually became a car guard. He moved his family into a one bedroom granny flat and his wife became a domestic worker. I made a point of chatting with him whenever I stopped at the center he worked at. And obviously I would tip him a R100 or so every time.

It made me realize that many of these people are there trying to support their families as a last resort, and I never know when something like that may happen to me...
 
Nothing. They always brag about how good they've looked after my car from far away but then they never know which car is actually mine.

The worst are those rickety old omies at Makro who would pick up your items without your permission and put it in the boot for you. Even though I'm fit and young enough to be their great-great-great grandson. I know they're just trying to be nice but come on man :(
 
I voted that I don't tip them because I seldom have cash to tip them, however if I do have small change I will give whatever I have.
