I recently noticed the bacon sold by pretty much all the brands (enterprise....and others) have a small percentage pork and a large percentage soya,brine/water, flavourants... and some brands even have msg! I love bacon and I am deeply worried by this :( Anyone know much about this? Is there a "healthier" alternative?

How sad is it that one has to ask nowadays how much pork is in bacon? It's like asking how much vegetable is in a tomato.

Just checked a packet of Eskort shouder bacon and only pork, salt and preservatives. Very interesting..

Mentioned this to a buddy of mine who eats a hell of a lot of bacon. His brother works for Eskort and his job entails quality checks and such, for bacon, from what I've gathered. My friend says that if there's anything in the bacon that's not bacon, his brother should be fired as they take that very seriously, so from Eskort's point of view you're safe at least.

No f'n ways, I went to go check the bacon in the fridge: Enterprise Back Bacon

Ingrediants:
Pork
Salt
Sugars (Maltodextrin??? & Dextrose) - thats the base of your more expensive sports drinks???
Stabilizer (E331)
Phosphates (E451, E450)
Sodium rythorbate (E316)
Flavour enhancer (E627, E631)
Spice Extracts
Anticaking agent (E551)
Curing agents [Sodium nitrate (E250), Sodium nitrate (E251), Potassium nitrate (E252)]

Bacon is cured meat, that involves using salt in either brine form or dry salt packing.

Bacon I buy tastes the same as when i first tasted it some decades ago.

Cannot remember the new brand, but we bought some cheap bacon from PnP (R15 for 250g) and it was the best smoked bacon we have ever eaten - bought 10 packs and we ate it the same month (we love bacon). All this talk of bacon is making me hungry, going to make some now .... mmmmm

that.
clearly there will be other additives. it's cured and smoked.
op, please post the brand of "bacon" which you purchased.

if you have an issue with msg, please read the wiki article around it's health concerns.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glutamic_acid_(flavor)#Research_into_health_effects.
i'm all for keeping the fda and their gras rulings in check, but you'd need to substantiate any claims against msg with hard evidence.

if you're really worried about your health, eating fried fatty smoked meat is probably not a good place to start.

the pick n pay house brand back bacon is generally pretty good price-wise and you can generally find a lean pack.
i've noticed most brands become leaner since that carte blanche episode which nailed the "like it lean" brand (amongst others) for being one of the fattiest.
what do you guys think about the new cook-in-the-pack-in-the-microwave bacon? anybody tried it?

I know the brand you are talking about. They upped the prices though, I also bought a stack for R15. Thats the one that had msg in it, haven't read enough on the long term effects but it just stood out.
