How much pork in bacon?

that.
clearly there will be other additives. it's cured and smoked.
op, please post the brand of "bacon" which you purchased.

if you have an issue with msg, please read the wiki article around it's health concerns.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glutamic_acid_(flavor)#Research_into_health_effects.
i'm all for keeping the fda and their gras rulings in check, but you'd need to substantiate any claims against msg with hard evidence.

if you're really worried about your health, eating fried fatty smoked meat is probably not a good place to start.

I will happily go to PnP and make a list of the brands tomorrow, dont have any bacon in my freezer atm. The reason I posted this was to find out more about the additives, whether its a positive or negative.

I know the brand you are talking about. They upped the prices though, I also bought a stack for R15. Thats the one that had msg in it, haven't read enough on the long term effects but it just stood out.

Who cares, it was tasty - I stopped caring about MSG in my food

Perhaps the problem here is thinking there is only one way to make bacon or that it must only consist of pork and salt.

I don't think that MSG in normal quantities is a health threat. Everything must be balanced. As long as you don't live off Aromat...

The only issue with MSG is for a small percentage of the population that is effected by it - all it really does is numb the taste buds for these guys, the irony of a flavour enhancer.

Reallity is that Aromat is as part of South African daily lives like Mrs Balls and All Gold. I remember how years ago resturants would order spices in 1kg bags but Aromat came in 5kg bags - most used spice in quality resturants years ago. We never had an issue till we got taught MSG is bad for us.

Never really researched it as I just went with the flow.

Nowdays I don't care and I really question all the hype. Got Aromat in the house and use it when I want to. My 3yr old loves it on his eggs.

No f'n ways, I went to go check the bacon in the fridge: Enterprise Back Bacon

Ingrediants:
Pork
Salt
Sugars (Maltodextrin??? & Dextrose) - thats the base of your more expensive sports drinks???
Stabilizer (E331)
Phosphates (E451, E450)
Sodium rythorbate (E316)
Flavour enhancer (E627, E631)
Spice Extracts
Anticaking agent (E551)
Curing agents [Sodium nitrate (E250), Sodium nitrate (E251), Potassium nitrate (E252)]

Why would they place salt twice on the list?

Sodium nitrate is salt.

Edit: oops after the 1st cup of coffee I realized my mistake, was thinking sodium chloride

Ditto - also thought the same (nearly mentioned salt on my OP but something kept on bugging me)

Well they are both salts just the one is your normal every day table salt, the other one is far more dangerous, and no I am not talking nitrite aka boom dangerous.

Sodium nitrate, damages your DNA and can lead to diabetes and is even linked to some cancers and long term memory problems.

I read a long article about the link to diabetes but I can't remember any specifics :(

Well I heard on tv that if more 'white stuff' comes out the poorer the quality is.Like Mr toilet said,go to your butcher if you want some quality :)

Real bacon is bacon, salted to be preserved, aka cured. There should be no preservatives in bacon at all.

Well, as I said "salted and preserved" I did not mention anything about adding additives at all. The best is to read the labels as many lf not most factories do add some preservatives to most consumer food products to make sure it is still oK by the time it is consumed by market.

I am saying that's the way bacon is supposed to be not how they sell it at supermarkets. If you buy "real" bacon at a butchery then they don't have any preservatives.

Confirmed - both back and streaky bacon packs from Enterprise.

Escort states that their bacon is 95% pork with saline and various other additives. So a 250 gram pack will have 237.5 grams of meat that came from a pig!:)
