Hey guys I almost bought a 60GB SSD from takealot with my ebucks for my laptop.

Then went looking at my hdd at how big certain folders are.

Windows folder 30gb
Programs files 30gb

I suppose it depends which OS but I don't think 60GB is enough for Windows 7 64bit, for me at least.

So I'll wait and get a 120gb, the SSD prices are falling very quickly.

Just get a 120gig. They so cheap now anyway. They got for like R1300.

For Windows 7 you'll need at least a 90GB one, but I'd recommend a 120-128GB one though.

The more free space you have on your SSD, the longer it will last as well.

60GB is not enough, I had to get rid of mine because of that. My 120Gb now is fine though.

Do not listen to people who tell you 60gb is enough. They are just talking BS and you will regret your purchase. A mate had windows and bf 3 installed, 56gb and no space left haha.

I think 90-120 is the minimum and 120gb should be the minimum but 90 should be able to cope.

Granted if the computer is a work pc with email and internet then 60gb is fine but for a gaming rig/work rig don't get less than 90gb.

You can always strip the windows install media down with something like vLite etc before installing that bloatware.

120 atleast. I use my SSD for win7, program files and a few games. I have 10gigs left. And when i say a few games I mean 3.

I am going to purchase another 120 for my games alone to run off. But yeah.....anything smaller youre looking at the drive as purely a caching drive.

Get as many gigabytes that you can afford. You will NOT be sorry.

Symlinking the WinSxS folder should be good for saving at least another 5gb without a perf hit. Gonna be a bit tricky though since the OS can't be running while that is done.

I got 120GB and I have to clear stuff out as I run out of space when I install new large programs (Max Payne 3, 30GB) Gonna get me another 120GB in RAID 0, :D 900-1000MB/s. 120GB is the min for SSD

Pretty sure you lose trim if you raid them. Plus latency goes up.

Almost all of these posts are generalizing/nonsense....

It depends on what you'll use it for, and what programs you'll need to install on it.
To answer your Q: You pointed out that your programs + win is already 60 GB, that means your stuff won't even fit on a 60 GB as the actual size is ~60,000,000,000 bytes = 55.9 GB

If you're a gamer, and want to install all the latest games on it, then obviously 60GB isn't going to be enough.

If you're just using MS office, and maybe a few other smallish apps, 60 GB will be plenty.

You won't need a 90 GB one for win7, as win7 doesn't need 90 GB. ^

If you don't have any other hdd's (eg like in a laptop) then you might want to consider a bigger one than if you have a hdd, to store more documents, multimedia, etc.

If you're dual booting, you will need to add the size of your secondary OS onto the required size of your primary.

bought a 60GB thinking my office PC with a secondary VM of XP will suffice, but it is already on about 45Gigs.

also note that apparently if you have hibernate on it will use up space as well as your page file sizing.

I've got a 60GB one and it's really not enough. I'd so go for a 120GB drive. Windows starts off quite small but it just gets bigger and bigger. I run Windows and most programs on the SSD. For now though I got to install games on my normal drive.
