I'm on Telkoms page and I can't make sense of how the **** much I will pay.

Can someone please just tell me before I start drawing up spread sheets and ****?

How much would I have to pay Telkom just to have a working ADSL 512 line that I can connect to Afrihost with? Like a total sum?

R326 (dsl) + R133 (phone line)

Then pay for afrihost data

Assuming that you already have a Telkom land line, you would have to pay an extra R326 per month for a 512 ADSL line.
If you dont have a landline, you will have to pay the line rental (about R133.30) plus the R326.
See Here

Note that they say that the DSL installation is R598.31 but you can do a self install which then makes it free.

That's bloody expensive!
If its to much then you can go for a 384k line, which would be 152 + 133.

Whatever you do, don't go for 512k line rental...its a shtty price point. Way more expensive than 384k, but barely faster. Either 384k, 4mbps or nothing.

Also remember that ADSL has a high fixed cost, meaning that if you do <3gb then you're better off with Cell C.

The thing with Cell C is coverage. I've heard from guys here at work who say the speeds are atrocious and the thing keeps on disconnecting.
Can they come out and check coverage before I commit to them?

The cost ratio for 512k is bad value for money... rather go for 384k, unless you don't mind paying around R560 instead for 4Mbps up to 10Mbps depending on what your exchange supports and your distance from it.

What are you using at the moment? What's it costing?
I use prepaid MTN. It costs R390.
I currently use about 2gigs per month but I'd like to be able to use more. Mostly likely around 5gigs a month.

The speed is pretty decent but since I'm moving to a place with a phone line I thought I'd see if I can get something more cost effective. But I don't want to feel like I'm using gprs or dial up. I want to be able to watch youtube videos without feeling like I can go make coffee between video loads.

I'd suggest that you avoid getting the Telkom Do Broadband / Simple packages, since you're forced to sign a 24-month contract!

512kbps lines aren't worth it. Either get 384kbps or 4Mbps+.

Telephone line rental:
Currently you're forced to leasing a land-line, which is R131pm. You can get the land-line installed for free, by selecting one of the Telkom Closer packages, with the Closer 1 being R19pm extra on that R131pm. Apparently you can cancel the Closer 1 package after the line has been installed :)

ADSL line rental:
384kbps ADSL line rental is R152pm, and this excludes data. 4Mbps+ ADSL line rental is R413pm.

Data:
You can get IS local only for quite cheap: 30GB IS Local only for R99 from Axxess, and the first 2GB includes international traffic!
There are also a few providers that offer free cap, like @lantic, Cybersmart and Afrihost. Please just be careful with the @lantic & Cybersmart ones!

You can often find cheaper line rental + data bundles.
I'm quite fond of the WebAfrica bundles, like R99pm for the first 3 months, which includes 1GB cap + 384kbps line rental, and thereafter it is R169pm.

OK. Firefox with AdBlock can be quicker than other browsers- no waiting (and paying!) for flashy ads. I also use the flashvideodownloader or something plugin for FF. Just find the page, click the button and away it goes. Downloads at the same speed it would take to stream. There are quality options too- HD, 720p, 1080p depending on video source.

I have 384k ADSL, uncapped. Used for torrents, pretty much runs 24/7. Pause them when I get home for browsing etc. Though with my Desire HD, I tend to get the laptop out less and less :D

Not sure what your exchange supports- check with Telkom. Might be a plan to test 384k, if it's unbearable then upgrade to a 1-10meg line. As mentioned, 512k is a useless value proposition.

I'd rather have more, slower than less but faster...

My 384k ADSL is R139/m through SAOL- PM me for contact details and I can get R50 off next month! Comes with 1GB free, R29 thereafter. Cheapest ADSL deal I know of. Have signed a few people up for it...

OR, take the above for 3months, then switch to SAOL :D

my do2 is NOT on contract, 'simple' is though and comes with only 1GB. ohja, dont forget about the router you'll have to buy

Thanks Srack0verflow & alf01. I really thought that 2 year contract was the only option with those Do Broadband packages.

I assume the 2 year contract is the only option if you want the "free" router?

There was a time when staff wasn't quite clued up & handed out routers to everybody (contract & month-to-month). Some time later someone must've awoken from their slumber though & put a stop to it.

Whats that cheap router called again Thendar or something...might be relevant to OP.

Do 3 may be a better option than 512 at Afrihost.

Costs slightly more, but plenty of whoosh

Unless of course you get one of those free 1GB Afrihost accounts (when avail).
I was one of the fortunate ones to get one (thanks Afrihost) and only pay R152 pm (on top of my rental) - the surfing speeds are faster than at work. And it is only R29 to buy another GB if needed.

(Of course it depends what you use the internet for.)

Cool, I think I'll go for 384k then.
Thanks for the advice guys.

Oh btw, what does self install entail? Setting up a router and plugging it in the phone jack? Can I just use my current wireless router then? It's got a phone plug.

Self install is pretty much just pluging everything in. Your current router should be fine.
