My take is they increase line rental and immediately get a benefit over so called price reductions. But here's the thing. As they roll-out more adsl, they just make more and more and more profit.

And the line rental increase, probably already compensates them for the reduced adsl. See they have many more lines than adsl users.

So overall the exorbitant prices are still being paid--that is to say the SA total bill. The idea is that the overall teleco bill is drastically reduced, but it is not--not even close--well supposedly by 1.2%--shame!

Wheres the do package savings?

It'd be nice to have a side by side comparison of the do packages compares to taking ADSL non-do because with these prices it's possible to pay R222 (ISP+ADSL line rental) pm and get 1GB int + 9GB local so if people work that out that it makes do1 seem not so nice anymore because on do you pay R199 for a HARDCAPPED 1GB. Only disadvantage to moving away from do is you have to pay 2 companies then. If WA's 10GB local includes (even unofficially) 1GB int then I'm dropping do.

My thoughts exactly, but the R530 is still stiff. I'll shut up, when it's 8mbps uncapped at around R200/m.

Enough to purchase one GB or prepaid bandwidth.
Which brings me to my next question. What about the cost of the usage? GB's in other words.
We need to take that into the account to give a more accurate picture.
As always the devil is in the detail or lack of it.

I hope by this time next year Telkom will remove the Access part of ADSL away altogether and focus on making the price an all inclusive price for the reseller/s.

All I ask for is: unshaped, 384k, 5Gb international + 5Gb local for R400 pm.

That would make it worth switching to ADSL for me.
 
This is good news, well at least the R80 savings on my 384k. No if only I could get those speeds constantly and unlimited bandwith, everthing will be peachy.
 
Any idea how much the new closer plans will be, I am on the Closer option 4 - R499 including 384k dsl, so I was effectively paying only R200 for DSL line rental
 
Telkom making more money.

4 million telephones @ R11.98 more = R47 920 000.00
260000 ADSL lines @ average -R90.00 = -R23 400 000.00 (actual average is R77.33)

so Telkom is making more money = R24 520 000.00 and we smile. :-(

Used to be a couple of hundred Rand to downgrade. There is no upgrade fee.
 
Thinking of how much I hate Telkodemonopolies...

Vodacom's HSDPA with a 2GB Data Bundle costs R389.00 [modem not included], and Telkodemonopolies' HomeDSL384 will cost me R263.90 from 2007-08-01, and then one still has to add on the cost of a 2GB ADSL ISP account - which is R149.00 when purchased from the monopolistic fixed line beast, which comes to R412.90 for pathetic HomeDSL384, and HSDPA gives me much better speeds...

Doesn't look like Telkodemonopolies even attempted to compete with Vodacom's 2GB HSDPA.
 
“Over and above the proposed price reductions, customers of the Telkom Closer and Telkom SupremeCall brands (for business) are also enjoying considerable cost savings,” Telkom said.

Although line rental is included in the Closer bundles, the subscription charge will stay the same. Telkom has also enhanced the offering with, among others, 30 free local minutes during standard time on the entry level plan and after these minutes are used up, a lower rate of 49c a minute - a saving of 19 cents.

Good news for Closer plans 3, 4 and 5 subscribers is that they now also get preferential rates on international calls, paying only 72c per minute for calls to 30 popular destinations. These rates will apply for peak and off-peak times for calls to fixed-line destinations.

I will have to analyse my bill and see whether I stay on Closer 4.
Popular destinations probably include places like Turkmenistan, Tokelau or Fiji, I presume.

Yes, there are a lot of MyADSL members on ADSL-linked Closer plans, but there is no clarity on whether prices on these plans will also fall come August. The same applies for the doCloser plans.

The implication is that these prices will remain unchanged. Considering the large number of people on these plans, Telkom could be getting away with PR murder.

All these subscribers will see no reduction in their monthly ADSL costs. Yet, Telkom will still get the credit for having dropped ADSL prices, when in fact, for a large portion of their ADSL clients, they've done no such thing.

RPM? Can you find out?

Look at your Telkom invoice - you will see that items are shown separately, which I would undersatnd to mean that you will pay the new prices for those items listed for price change, i.e. ADSL and line rental.

I see Closer5 as one item, R613.76 ex-vat, no breakdown.

Interesting, what amount does it show for ADSL Rental? Because R245 + R300 (Closer 3) = R545 not R499. is there some kind of credit on the bill?
