Hi Everyone

I've managed to find a MacBook Pro which I do like, and is in great condition. What would be a good price to pay/offer to make on it?

Specs:
Mid 2010
MacBook Pro 17"
Intel Core i7
500GB
4GB Ram
512MB Graphics

From what i've read also, this is a machine that allows upgrades as well. So im thinking in the future I could bump up to an SSD and 8GB Ram if really needed

Any ideas on cost/price?

Thanks!!

Don't buy it. Any Mac that is older than 5 years is considered vintage / obsolete by Apple. Should you have hardware issues in the future, there will be no parts availability though the authorized service channels.

Thank you for your advice! Didn't know this, will start keeping an eye out for another...

Isn't that the Mac with Screencard problems? I know there was a recall on either 2010 or 2011 models with screencard problems. Sent one client to the iStore when he tried to persuade me that I sold him the Mac, but when I checked the serial, the Mac was sold in Germany...

Completely untrue.

The 17" with Nvidia card does have graphics card issues, so should be avoided for that reason. You can check the serial on Apple's support site to see if it is affected, they will swap the motherboard (logicboard in apple parlance) if faulty though for another while still.

If you did buy it, I'd probably look at about 4-5k odd depending on condition. Then buy some ram and upgrade it, and probably an SSD and replace the HDD. I recently bought a 15" of the same vintage for slightly less than that, and did that to it to have as a backup for my retina pro.

Thanks @Francois Marais @Isheed_cn.

The one im actually thinking of getting was bought from the US. I have used is a couple of times also, haven't noticed anything wrong with graphics or anything, it is however a little sluggish compared to nowadays machines, probably because of the SSD as well.

Is there somewhere online with apple i can check the serial number?

What do you want to check? This one will tell you about the warranty but I'm pretty sure that's long expired. https://selfsolve.apple.com/agreementWarrantyDynamic.do

I would want to just check if there is a problem with the graphics on that specific model. Yup warranty im sure is long gone..

I was actually thinking of getting a 13", but the 17" screen is a plus, as well as its an i7 so another pro there as well

Keep in mind that model will only support SATA II so don't waste money buying a SATA III unless you're going to want to use it later in something that supports it.

Seesh, didnt even think about that, thanks!

Would it be better to go for a 13" 2012 or 17" 2010? Anything other model/year recommendations?

I'm not talking about a hard drive or memory upgrade / replacement.

If the logic board or display goes Digicape / Core can't get you a replacement.

R4,000 - R5,000.

That machine is valued at around R5k mark and I would pay that for it.

Thanks @Sonic2K.. From what I see general price is around 5k for that machine. Hope its worth it though

there are people who are capable of board level repairs who can deal with those problems
