Every 3 months a little overkill?

I analyse my brothers PC for him and seem to always get 'You should defrag this drive now' ... despite the fact he doesn't use his PC often

Well I've heard that my friend defrags every week... Maybe THAT's a little overkill

i have seen it said that the difference is marginal at best for windows systems.

on linux it is not an issue.

I depends on how much data/software your install/uninstall or move around.

After I do data maintenance I defrag, thereby shortening the time it takes for my computer to find data on the disk.

My 500gb data disk is going to be maintained tonight, It's about 3/4full and I've been filing data in their correct folders.

While I work I don't always take the time to put my data in the right folder so I end up with lots of data that I have to file.

The HD has a small arm that moves to the rings on the surface of the disk, reaching for a particular sector, the HD moves the arm to the right ring and waits while that sector spins into position, so if you're heavily fragmented it takes longer

Windows automatically defrags my hard drive once a week.

Not sure about XP, but Vista and Win7 takes care of defrags during idle time if needed. If look for the system scheduler, you can make changes to when your system auto defrags or shut it off completely.

Honestly, I cant remember when i last did a manual defrag! Its been years!

I never bother to defrag cos as soon as my system slows down, it gets formatted.

+1

But at the moment my PC slow and can't think of formating... so I may defrag
It has alot of data still to to backup- about 280gigs. So I will defrag
