How often to the Paediatrician ?

After your kids turned 1, how often did you take them to the Paediatrician for a general checkup ? And until what age did you take them for regular checkups?
 
I think we've taken our children maybe 3 times in total to the paed - in 4 years. There isn't a hard and fast rule. But I will say that we have decided if they have a serious problem like not just a cold/flu, then we will rather take them to the paed first than the doctors.
 
When my daughter was small I used to take her to the Paediatrician till the day I heard the receptionist discussing amongst each other how they must make sure the bill is paid before the patients can see the paediatrician otherwise they would be in trouble. You had to pay upfront even though you had a medical aid and it was not even your first visit. There was a notice as well if you where late you were going to be billed double nevertheless the fact that I waited an hour half after my scheduled time to see the doctor. then he had a 2 minute look and said everything is fine.

Since that day I just go to my GP who is friendlier with kids and takes more time and is more thorough

To be honest I think this paed cared more about the money as his patients
 
We have taken our 6 month old to the paed once, when he was two months old, not sure what he really does differently to a normal GP? We spent R700 for him to check for two minutes and that was it, our GP does a full checkup, makes sure everything is okay and we pay R290, also friendlier and better with our son then the paed was. We'd only take our son to the paed if the GP can't help him out.
 
We've never taken either of our daughters to a pediatrician after their respective first birthdays. The eldest is now 5 and the other one turned 2 last month.

The only thing we did was take them to the optometrist (I have eye problems and he asked me to bring them just to be sure, they didn't inherit any of my problems).

I don't think we've ever taken them for a general check up per se, but the way they turn the house upside down within minutes of entering, there doesn't seem to be a fscking thing wrong with them! :)
 
Don't bother with a paed unless it's serious. My daughter has been seen a paediatrician twice and one of those times was the day she was born. Got a great GP who is great with kids and has a young daughter of his own and he's done a great job so far.
 
Well, our paediatrician is excellent with kids; much better than the GP (a lady). He requested to see my daughter (who is now 1) again at 18 months and after that at age 2 and from then on every 12 months until she is about 3 or 4. My husband is incredibly protective of her and would probably insist we go every year, even if it is just to assure ourselves that all is well.
 
My GP knows (and cares) more about babies than the paeditrician & he answers all our questions in *simple english*.
my son has only seen a pead twice in his life, once when he was born & again when I didnt know better :D
 
Our paediatrician is fantastic but for most things he's overkill - GP works out much better.

You get to know your kid and you GP, and we just learned that our GP's here do not know the first thing about treating anyone under the age of 5.

Don't ask me how, but the meds from the GP never seem to work for the kids. It has been a while since we had our youngest at the paediatrician. We only bother when we know something is up. For general checkup our GP is okay.
 
My children have never been. And they have to be on deaths door before I consider the GP. My 16 yr old has been to the GP once, the younger one a few times because she is chesty and has been admitted to red cross for pneumonia so I'm a little more careful.

Wow take good care of him seems like he is a fighter already. Ours was four weeks Prem and he was tiny.
 
Never have. Will only use a paediatrician when specialist assistance is required. GP is good enough in general.
 
Took my daughter once, when she was 5. And only because it was recommended on the clinic card. GP from there on out.
 
After our kid turned 1 the only time we tool him was for serious illness and to get innoculations from the awesome nurse who operates out of her rooms.

The government clinic near us is great, so we just got all the vaccines done there.
 
If it aint broke don't fix it.
Kid grows up to be a hypochondriac if he makes to many unneccesary trips to the doc.
