Hello Everyone.

I'm planning on taking an Uber from Parktown to the Soweto College of Education in Pimville. Once I'm done there I will be taking an Uber back from Pimville to Parktown. Can anyone tell me if I will definitely get an Uber from Pimville, Soweto back to Parktown? I am only afraid of being stranded there and having no way to get back. Therefore, how reliable is Uber and what are my chances of being stranded?

Thanks in advance.

My GF and I use Uber alot here in CPT.
Okay, My GF uses it alot and I jump on here and there.
We've had no bad experiences in the what... 20 odd rides we've used.
I can definitely recommend it.

I've used it once by myself, the driver and I had such a lekker chat that I had to give him a 5 star rating.

You can kind of gauge yourself the odds of getting an uber in Pimville. Set the pick up location on the app to where you intend to be picked up - you should be able to see the approx number of cars in the area.

There's approximately 6 cars in the area with 5 mins pick up time

Good luck and discover the one thing that baffles my mind with Uber drivers they cannot drive or read a GPS.

But as whole its great.

I've used Uber a lot in CT, but my wife is going on a trip to Jo'burg next month and intends to rely on Uber to get around while there. Is it safe for a lady alone in the Jo'burg area? I've read the sensationalised news reports about violence and stuff, is it exaggerated or is there really a risk?

Just remember that you won't be able to get one at Parktown Station, if that is where you were planning to Uber from, and you'll have walk a bit first.

Its safe to take uber or even Taxify, yes there are some hot spots but its mostly safe.

The best trick if you worry about safety is to jump in next to the driver instead of sitting at the back.

Then it's not obviously a taxi and therefore not targeted.

I'm sure Uber doesn't like, and neither might the drivers, but a useful "hack" for when you're stranded somewhere with no Ubers available is to move the pin until you get an area where there are cars, book a ride, and then phone the driver immediately and say you stuffed up the location and offer a bit of extra cash. This saved my ass one Sunday morning at 2am after a wedding out in Honeydew/Muldersdrift. Moved the pin over to further up Beyers Naude, closer to civilisation, and then paid the driver extra directly to come out into the wilderness to collect me.

this is one interesting solution I must admit ^^^

dont know how well it works as calling an uber driver nowadays is hard, goes through to a special number
and sometimes it says you are not allowed to call them back,

Have they changed the app? Used to be a "contact driver" button once you've confirmed.

Surely you've heard how the metered taxi drivers intimidate the Uber drivers, especially at the Gautrain stations

No longer use the Gautrain from the airport for this reason. Just Uber directly from OR Tambo these days. Colleague was hauled out of an Uber a couple of months ago while Gautrain security just watched because they "didn't want to escalate the situation". Hope Bombela realises that their lack of interest in providing anything more than lip service to security at their stations is ultimately going to damage their bottom line. You can post all the security guards you want but if they are instructed not to do anything about the blatant intimidation and lawlessness it's pointless.
