How Sony lost the plot

EVER since Sony lost the battle between its Walkman music player and Apple’s iPod, it has been trying to strike back. Last week, it paid $900m to take full control of Sony-BMG, its music joint venture with Bertelsmann.
 
Too much focus in one area will do that :/

I know the SE company is also struggling.
 
Apple with it`s iPod is so far ahead of all other competitors it`s not even funny in the mp3 industry

Commercially yes, but if you prefer discrete features, there
are better players out there at lower price. :)
 
The problem with SONY, other than the gaijin figurehead 'in charge', is that
SONY produces the content and the playback devices, so its content
division squashes any attempts at user friendliness which come from
the consumer electronics division.
 
One word: Advertisements

And also, they have to create a "only cool people have Walkmans" vibe that Apple did with their iPod's
