How the WITS student voting will work

That's the thing some university's aps entry is so low that it increases the risk of dropping out. Government subsidizes for free education and thousands fail every year and ends up wasting more than half of the money when u look at the stats of how many actually graduate.

Up the education level in school and aps entry for uni and we will see less students getting accepted and wasting resources that could've helped someone who is actually smart enough to get in and make it to graduation.

I stated this before, not everyone is made out to be a lawyer or doctor, and we need a big focus on trade colleges with short courses/12 month courses to get people skilled in something. Electrical, welding, carpentry i did renovation work for almost 10 years, and if u give someone that opportunity to do a course like that, they will get a job or can even start their own thing afterwards, there is plenty of work in this field from my experience in south africa.

Mind pointing out which of those are thumb sucks, bud?

You're exaggerating the effect of that 1%. The only people who'd really feel the pinch are the rich. The lower brackets will have minor amounts deducted.

You're pulling at straws. If you get rejected at university based on performance but not being able to afford it is another thing. If increasing APS scores is needed to control numbers then so be it. Every department already has it's own entry requirements anyway.

About everything boet.

How mu\ch do you think NSFAS is owed and how much have been written off by them?

Free education is a myth. There is no way that I'll pay for privileged people like you. There are much more worthy things in SA that must be addressed before assisting a bunch of spoiled brats.

SammyD is very quiet on how a tax like this will affect the economy. He thinks the degree thing automatically gives a job. He does not realize that increasing taxes will slow down the economy and more jobs will be lost. He sorely requires education but sadly it cannot be free. What we are offering here is free though. :D

The 19 billion comes from a calculation quoted earlier in the thread from a previous thread in reference to a proposed 1% graduate tax. Student numbers don't have to increase significantly. There's only so much space at institutions. The best will get in, the average will not.
The projects you're talking about are irrelevant because the money for doesn't come from the current tax revenue but additional.
Clearly as the above numbers show, the required additional capital is 17-25 billion which the 19.5 billion (if this were the model used) accounts for, more or less nullifying your affordability argument

Great, so a 1% additional tax, plus another tax next year to fund the NHI. Lets take all that out of the economy which is already sitting at 0% growth. Most likely to fund thousands of political commentators and arts majors as our maths and science is amongst the world in the world. The tax payer sure will be getting a bang for his buck.

Not only that, SARS is under collecting at the moment because of the poor economy. Pravin will probably be forced to raise taxes because of the shortfall. An additional tax will send our economy in a downward spiral.

Thats okay. Perhaps we should set tax at 100%, and then just make everything free?

Where the hell are you getting your numbers?

The cost of making universities free would cost R70 billion a year.

If you were to try raise just half of that through income tax you would have to increase income tax revenue by 14% !

Erm, no. The blacks will get in and the whites not. You know quotas?

Try again

SammyD, this is all BS, you don't know what you are talking about.

SA can't afford this BS, largely due to ANC corruption and incompetence.

But also because the country just isn't wealthy enough.

Try harder.

As stated before, no-one said artisans should be done away. But if you're good enough for other professions, money should be a barrier. Yeah, higher aps scores may weed out the average which would be a good thing in keeping numbers down, but they certainly have no bearing on your probability of graduating. Dux awardee in my old school a few years ahead of me, guy got excluded first year with a mental breakdown to top it all off (average 98% iirc). So drop out rates will always be high no matter how high the aps scores are.

You might actually want to try reading. If you ain't reading sources, dont bother trying to to have this conversation this conversation.

And for that very fact that NSFAS just isn't working, something different needs to happen.

Vrot you're stinking up the place. Move along.

You might actually find that out if you read every post and every source i post.

Oh and I'm not gonna waste my time on any of the other sarcastic posts. This thread is getting boring as ****.

LOL, you are losing the debate and now suddenly you are bored.

No it's getting boring because it's a 312 post thread that's now repeating itself which in and of itself is just repeating another 297 post thread. How many times do you think I've had to repeat myself in these conversations. It's getting boring AF.

We did not discuss the effects your proposed tax will have on our struggling economy, but I see you are avoiding it.
