How to apt-get install Syncevolution?? I need help from a wizard geek please

Hi

So I have installed Zorin OS 7 32-bit and I am using Evolution to sync with my phone via Funambol. In other distro's, this worked well but my Syncevolution won't at all start. I was thinking to insta;; the latest via command line in a terminal but I lack the skill to put together the apt-get command. Can someone please help me get it right?

Thanks, Ponder, I have made a note of this now, for future use.

Even though I managed to solve the problem just a few minutes before your mail arrived, I really appreciate your help as I am now at the dangerous stage where I am confident enough to start using sudo in terminal windows. I have found that Linux updates easier and requires less technical know-how than even Win8. Getting anything done in 8 was just a challenge and the supposed ease of use is just a myth. not that user-friendly. My Linux does afford me some challenges but, after having used it for about six years now, I have only kept XP on dual-boot until recently. Win 7 Ultimate and now Win 8 both had to go after I had experienced compatibility issues with hardware. Maybe because both were 64-bit.

My Zorin OS is 32-bit as I am not sure if all apps that I am using can work properly on 64-bit.


The problem with my Syncevolution was that I needed to install more packages. I used Synaptic and downloaded the lot, not just the initial files installed by default.

Zorin is doing fine on limited hardware here, just an i3 (newer release but with HD300 like Sandy Bridge) and 2GB RAM. It never even comes close to using 1GB, let alone all 2GB. It is omly used for office admin and it is over qualified for that, when using Linux.

64-bit in linux is pretty mature, I've been using 64-bit for over 6yrs already and these days it comes with multi-lib support where it will also pull in 32-bit stuff where required.

If you use it for general office admin then have a look at kingsoft/wps office as it has very good MS office compatibility, only downside is it has no open/libre office .odf document support so if you already have docs in that format you will have to export them as ms office formats first before changing over.

Seeing as Zorin 7 is based on Ubuntu Ringtale (13.04) you can follow ubuntu based guides/documentation for most things.

I've been using Kingsoft for quite a while and I eve prefer it over MS Office as the latter has become cumbersome bloatware. I never knew that KS is now on Linux; when I inquired with them maybe early 2013, not sure when, I was told that a Linux version may be forthcoming yet there was no certainty at the time. I will have a look there as well. Pity I did not know, as the 64-bit issues were in fact with Libre, not too long ago.
 
I just had a look there - Kingsoft Linux is a whopping 150MB download compared with around 74MB for Windows. Will do it later with my nite time bundle.
 
If you want PM me an address and I'll try and chuck a cd in the post next week some time.

Make sure you download the latest version though as it seems to get regular patches.
 
Syncevolution is doing exceptionally well on Zorin 7 43-bit. Skype as well. I have also downloaded Kingsoft but my system refuses to install it. I have been using Kingsoft on XP for about a year, alongside Libre. Kingsoft is much more MSO-like but it also showed up in security tests on my PC. As Linux won't install it, I have no idea how it would compare to the Windows version. For now, it is Libre.

It finally installed. Now the next issue: all in Chinese, when I open it, there is a dialogue box requiring three fields of data to proceed. maybe a name, email address and a license key? All in Chinese although the link was for the English one. Joke is on me, I suppose! :)

sudo rm qt.qm wps.qm wpp.qm et.qm

Open the application.

Cool. Do you also get that annoying web page at startup, wondering if they removed that or switched it off yet. You can get rid of it if you want, if it still has it let me know and I'll go dig out a howto I did some time ago.
 
Ok, follow this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_UgcgQOHbDU from eaxctly 0:52 to 1:22 which will get rid of the annoying web page tab, it's easier than explaining it as you have to switch to the Chinese language to fix it.


edit:
just found this which is easier;

Go to the Writer menu, then Options > General and Save > Start with ... > New Document.
