How to avoid solar panel theft
Solar panel theft is an emerging trend in South Africa, and Auto & General Insurance's Johanni Jennings says it's best to install them far out of reach and behind robust security barriers.

My house orientation, means my panels face east and west instead of north. The same orientation makes it hard to see my panels from the street.

In my area there are plenty flat-roof houses, the panels are all visible from the street, and the fact that they are so accessible makes them very vulnerable

Has anyone had them stolen? I don't know anyone who has had panels stolen, so although it's something that has probably happened to someone I have a feeling it's just a problem that's blown out of proportion to create news.

Not that I heard of, although my neighbourhood is very secure. However, my installer mentioned that he heard its more of an issue with the commercial customers, especially at night when its unoccupied and over the December shutdown period.

I know of a shopping centre having all of its many panels stolen one night.

True, quite a number of incidents I've heard of. Not one of them a house.
