Well i've been toying with an idea of becoming a WISP in my local gated complex, providing email/surfing and the occasional WoW session for my neighbours who dont support Telkom.

I currently have a 4meg ADSL line from telkom into the house and 3 ADSL accounts ranging from semi-shaped to shaped.

What I'd like to know is what do i need to set up a wisp and what do I need to manage it.

Have some IT background on Cable internet more than wireless so not a total noob to the net.

Thanks

easy way to become wisp

Check out www.skyrove.co.za or kooku.co.za they both offer easy way to set up hot spot. You then sell vouchers to your neighbors.

Draw a plan sketch ( with approximate distances ) and then speak to scoop or micro on what type of hardware you should put up.

good luck and I hope you are prepaired to spend hours on this project. When your neighbors cant connect they will come knock on your door at 2 am.

I would rather go for my own kind of structure like a Radiusmanager 3.6.0 setup and do my own thing, not to share the profit with any other kind of third party members. Not to be nasty but you are starting off and want to provide a decent service with full facilities of your own with your own branding out there and not run under a third party Company... Try www.maxcomm.co.za they are good with starting solutions including billing etc. thats my idea on the situation...

But I suppose using a third party makes it legal?

You may not sell bandwidth without a license even on a small scale like that.:D
