my boss recently changed my username and pw for the broadband account we use. he wont tell me if its uncapped or not (probably worried il abuse it, which i wont -just some youtube and perhaps internet radio streaming xD)

so basically is there any way i can find out if we're now on 512 kbps uncapped, i don't have the login details either.

maybe a specific speedtest which is severly shaped on the uncapped service for eg?

any ideas? i know the account username had a series of numbers in it.

Phone mweb, give them your user login & business name, innocently ask the support person to "check" that they put you on the right package: "My boss asked me to check that you signed us up on the right package. Please can you check on your system what you have us signed up for?"

Problem solved :)

(ps: I've been watching way too much Burn Notice :D)

There is a way to check by your IP address, the uncapped products are in a certain range, the MWEB rep told us this in one of the MWEB threads, I think it's the Q&A thread, go look there.
Then do a speedtest and it'll tell you your IP range and bam, you'll work out if you're uncapped or not.

I dunno if this helps but I'm on mweb uncapped and they gave me ip of 41.x.x.x

Are you guys thick? Or do you just not read? The OP said that he doesn't have the login details. He doesn't even know the username. Logging into the MWeb website is not an option.

Best bet is to try to phone Mweb and get the info from them, as na-iem pointed out. Try to trick or convince them into telling you... Pretend to be the IT Manager of the company. They might ask you to confirm the company registration number and contact details...

Alternativelty, try to send an email using smtp.mweb.co.za. If you have an Mweb account, you will be able to access and send emails from the Mweb SMTP server with no authentication (if you can't send an email using smtp.mweb.co.za, ythen you're not on Mweb). However this won't tell you if you're on uncapped.. just wether you are on MWeb or not. If you were with another ISP before, and your boss changed to another provider in the last week, and it happens to be Mweb, then there's a 95% chance you're on uncapped.

You could try this:
go to whatsmyip.org, check your ip, then do: dig -x ip_address_here
or paste the ip in at domainwhitepages.com

You should get some sort of hostname associated to your ip. It might just say mweb, I wont know, I dont use them... yet

Simple:

Queue up 300gb of downloads.
If they stop at 1gb you're on prepaid.
If they stop at 3gb you're on telkom.
If they almost stop at 5gb then speed up again overnight you're on axxess uncapped.
If they stop at 11gb your boss won a WA 11gb/R99 account.
If they stop at 16gb your boss won a WA 16gb/R499 account.
If they stop at 20gb or so you might have an AfriHost 2gb account.
If they stop at 30gb your boss won a WA 30gb/R199 account.
If they stop at 100gb you're on mweb/vox uncapped.
If they stop at 200gb you're on afrihost uncapped.
If they complete then you probably shouldn't come in to work anymore...

Ohhh, I thought he said he had the username (the reference to it having a whole lot of numbers in it).

Anyway, without the username, it is still possible find out what kind of account you have:
phone them up, do NOT pretend to be the IT manager, rather pretend to be his PA/assistant/whatever (easier to get away with not knowing something technical about the account), then give them your company name and tell them your boss asked you get them to check if your account has been activated properly, and just to be thorough, could they give you the exact details of the product. Throw in something like "This is one of those new products you guys just released last week, right?"
a) "No sir, we've had these for ages." Then it's not uncapped. Reply with something like "Ohh, sorry, mistake."
b) "Yes yes, that's right." Then it's uncapped.

Just call them up..Tell them your boss asked you to make sure they got you on the (No Hat) option or not. If the rep knows what you trying to say, he'll laugh his ass off before correcting you and therefor not worry about anything else!

yip that makes more sense. Alternatively, just try and get the info out of your boss somehow. Challenge him to a game of pool, darts, something, or bribe him, or just irritate him (but not too much, don't get fired). Try to convince him somehow. Or make it seem like your work will go a lot faster, or will be easier, or more productive, if you knew that you had access to more bandwidth, at no additional costs. For e.g. online video tutorials for your line of work. If he then says NO WE DON'T HAVE UNCAPPED, that will be the perfect time to try and convince him to get it, based on your current reasoning of productivity improvements, without sounding like you trying to fish for more bandwidth to abuse. Nice and sneaky.

I'll phone mweb a bit later today. im 80% sure we're on uncapped because we were with mweb before, and all three shops were on one account, then we started having concurrent connection problems and now each shop has its own account. so either hes got us on uncapped or 3 x prepaid options.

i suppose i could try get the username and pw from him, and test if the account can take more than one concurrent connection, if not then its def. uncapped?

if the phoning mweb thing doesn't work
