Android Auto is officially not yet available in South Africa, but we have a workaround which is safe, does not affect your mobile phone's warranty or require your device to be rooted/jailbroken. Here's how to get Android Auto in South Africa.

Firstly what is Android Auto and why do I need it?

According to the official website, "Android Auto is a simpler way to use your phone in the car. Whether on your phone screen or on your car display, Android Auto was designed with safety in mind. With larger touch targets, a simplified interface, and easy-to-use voice actions, it's designed to minimize distraction so you can stay focused on the road."

Essentially it replicates your Android phone's screen on the car's infotainment system. Functionality is reduced and only core applications such as Google Maps, music streaming service such as Google Play Music and communication apps like Whatsapp work. This is great, because it's pretty much all you need and plus, you're not supposed to be focused on the road – not fiddling with your 'phone – while driving.

Does it work? Absolutely. We've been using our workaround fix and sampling it in a variety of test cars. To activate Android Auto, plug your phone's cable into the USB port (that's over and above the handsfree Bluetooth connection). Essentially, there's no need to touch your phone while you're behind the wheel because everything can be controlled via voice command. You'll need an Android mobile phone running Android 5.0 Lollipop (minimum requirement).

If you're running an older car which does not offer USB connectivity or a modern infotainment screen, then fear not as we've got a solution for that. You see, Android Auto offers two modes. The first mode is where the phone's screen is replicated via the car's infotainment screen, but if you don't have this then you can use the second mode where you use your phone's screen. The best course of action is to purchase a phone mount where your device sits either at the base of your windscreen or mounted on an air conditioning vent. The second mode reduces phone functionality too, so you're not distracted.

This sounds great, but why can't we get it on Google Play? Apple rolled out its CarPlay system in South Africa without any hiccups, yet Google has, for some reason, not launched this convenient and safer app on the local market (at least not yet). As a result, it's not available in the Google Play store and to add insult to injury, it's a free app, so we're at a loss as to why it's not here yet. However, we have a fix so you can enjoy the benefits. We use Google Maps extensively at Cars.co.za, even if we're doing the commute as the live traffic service helps us dodge the worst congestion.

How to get Android Auto in South Africa?

The best way to get Android Auto in South Africa would be for Google to activate it, but seeing as that hasn't happened, here's how you can get it without affecting your phone's warranty or rooting the device:

1) Open your phone's web browser to https://www.apkmirror.com/apk/google-inc/android-auto/
2) Find the newest version of Android Auto and select "Download APK". The button you're looking for says "Verified safe to install".
3) The application install file will download.
4) You will need to open the file and install.
5) Some phones may not run an application that hasn't come from the Google Play Store and you'll need to go through the settings in your phone and allow application installations from Unknown Sources.
6) The application will install and then it's time to set up.
7) A quick note that you should revisit APKMirror once a month to ensure your app is up-to-date.

Setting up Android Auto

Check if your vehicle is equipped with Android Auto compatible here. If so, simply plug the phone into the car and Android Auto will automatically start. You can then follow the prompts and you're ready to go.

If your car is older, you can just unlock your phone and immediately run the Android Auto application. You'll be greeted by a minimalist screen with big buttons and you have shortcuts for Google Maps, calls and music streaming services.

That's it, that's all it takes to get Android Auto in South Africa. If you're battling, you're more than welcome to leave a comment below or tweet us @carssouthafrica and we'll help get you connected.

I have Android Auto. But then, I also bought an aftermarket head unit of which one of the requirements was Android Auto functionality.

Having said that, when using AA in phone only mode (no infotainment screen), I don't really see the point of the USB cable, as I have used AA in this fashion when I still had the oem head unit, which didn't even have Bluetooth. Obviously you have to manually launch the app when you want to use it. Adding Bluetooth (I did so via a BT dongle in the aux port- but having proper integration is much better obviously) just makes the audio experience better, and I'm assuming the USB cable only really acts like an on-switch for the AA interface (I never tried using the USB together with the oem head unit).

I've used Android Auto in a different way as well. A Google Chromecast Audio via aux input, instead of streaming directly via whatever app (Google Play Music), I used the Google Home app to cast to the device- this has the added benefit that not only my music apps, but other apps such as Maps also have the audio routed to the car stereo.

All in all, I'm a fan of Android Auto. I'm not sure why they haven't launched here yet, it's pretty cool.

One thing though. Why is WhatsApp (and Telegram) on the list of compatible apps? Great logic. (interesting fact, Telegram shows up under my music apps, but not messaging apps like WhatsApp does). Reading messages from WhatsApp really doesn't work that well if it's not in English, and few of my messages are.

Also- this is a glorified how-to-sideload-an-app article essentially, but I guess it's good for exposure and it does get the point across.

Google confirms Android Auto pixelated display issue

For past several months, Android Auto users have been complaining about an issue that causes the display on their car's head unit appear to be very pixelated. Following is a screenshot shared by one of the complainants.

Going by user reports, the problem doesn't seem to be specific to any particular car manufacturer or model. Similarly, complaints have been coming from users with different phones (mostly Pixel though) running OS versions ranging from Nougat to Oreo.

What's good is that Google has finally confirmed the issue, saying they are working with the Android OS team to address it. Following is exactly what a Google employee said on the matter.

Sadly, there's currently no information on what's causing the problem and when a fix will begin rolling out.

I wish they would work on the no sound issue I'm experiencing when using Google Play Music :(

I've been using AA for a few days now and, compared to Car Play, it's buggy as hell. It regularly freezes or the music stops playing and I have to reset everything.

It also sucks that you cannot use the phone at all while connected.

But but...Google Maps is a fair bit better than Apple Maps. So that's a major benefit of AA over CP.

Actually Waze is better than GM or AM IMO because it tells me the speed limit, but overall AA is a buggy POC.

OK? :D

I wish it were otherwise, since I have an android phone now, but it crashes more often than bitcoin.
I'd be inclined to agree, save for my Nexus 5X. That thing just worked flawlessly with AA. (still does, in fact). I think a lot of the issues AA is currently facing is related to the hardware manufacturers, but then, there are reports of the various incarnations of the Pixels also not playing nice. So who knows... You're probably right.

Maybe my opinion is tainted coming from Apple, but CarPlay was just flawless in terms of reliability. Both systems are locked down tight so I don't see why AA shouldn't work right.

AA might be locked down, but the bloat are common on Android phones is not. I believe a lot of the issues arise from the manufacturers side of things.

Sounds like Android in general then.

And I say that without any fanboyism.

I've literally never seen **** crash on iOS outside of Betas.

Android it happens at least daily.

That part I can agree with.

The one thing that is winning me over on Android is the Google Maps integration.

When I get the new car and swop back to IOS down the line I'll probably leave this phone in the car just for that.

Please tell me I can use the Apple Music app on AA?

Apple maps is a small price to pay for the whole package.

I'll let you know in the AM. I've just installed it and am downloading my playlists. If it works I can remove Google Music.
