How to get TV in SA?

a newbie question:

how do I get TV in South Africa?

we're living in a house with a satellite dish and a cable into the living room, what next?

we need a TV, a receiver and/or decoder, something else?

Is TV free (means: are there free channels) and can we simply go into a shop and buy a receiver (which model?) or do we have to pay monthly fees and need to get a contract? Are there multiple providers, how good are they, how much do they cost?

any hint how to proceed is appreciated.
 
You need an aerial for free* Terrestrial TV, or buy a 1110 DSTV decoder, plug the cable into it, and subscribe to DSTV, packages start at R20 a month.

*You need a TV licence.
 
This might come across as rude, but do you even know how to change a 3-prong plug?
 
Sir Andy in SA we have a thing called TV license which you will need to apply for ( honestly have no idea where as i never had to do it) only then can you walk in to a shop like Game or Dion at your locale Mall and purchase a TV
You do receive free channels like :sick: SABC 1, SABC 2, SABC 3 and my favorite ETV ( E TV is the best ) but i would not suggest watching thos as they would make you trully insane
better get your DSTV working :)

a couple of helpful replies, this thing with the license reminds me of Germany, didn't know it exists elsewhere too, will check out the web sites in your posts.

@Heita Hola: no, I'm not, I guess as an SA citizen I would have known the answers

@Icbxx: no, I don't, in fact I do not even know what a 3-prong plug is, couldn't find it in a dictionary either
 
In true South African fashion this is what you do: Walk into your neighbor's house go to their living room and take the LCD.
Don't forget to say that you are sorry on your way out, and that you might be back later for the stereo.

Mate of mine was telling me last night that his parents have moved to Aussie, and they had also not connected to any of the Paid TV companies. When he asked why they hadn't, his dad laughed and said "Well we have 8 free channels, 4 of them are in HD, and they have better stuff on than any of the BS we had to pay for in SA"
