How to get your hands on a free digital TV decoder

Does an Overview decoder work for DTT, or only have an input for satellite frequencies?

Ja thanks. was a bit confused between the two. The Takealot one is presumably the same as the one being issued by the SABC.

The spacetv one at least looks a little bit more modern.
 
Does the government one even have a remote sensor? I don't see one in the pictures, so suspect it is "manual remote" only? (e.g. ask a family member to press the button for you...)

No there are no decoders around that I know of without IR remotes. The fact that you can't see the sensor in a very poor pc means nothing.

Thanks for the clarification. More remotes lying around...

In theory a decoder can process multiple streams, but it seems all the cheaper ones can only do a single channel. This would mean you can't record one station, while watching another. And every TV in a house needs its own decoder.

eBay DVB-T2 box

Got this one for my dad. He doesn't have a dish, so Openview wasn't an option.

A small single "digital TV" antenna works best, but you can actually get away with pretty much any analogue TV antenna if the Sentech signal in your area is strong enough.

No need for a roof aerial installation in most cases.

Correct. These things are all "single view" devices with one "tuner".

We have been thoroughly spoiled by DSTV decoders! That is why I have been so reluctant to "dump" dstv totally.

The 4-tuner decoders (view one record 2) are fantastic from a flexibility point of view.
With two of these in XV, I have view two, record 4 capability, which effectively means that one could access 6 different channels simultaneously.

The 4th tuner is used internally by MC for BO, CU, and all their own background BS that goes on all the time.

And it is also why we were so extremely upset when DSTV "dumped" the original SDPVR technology because it was capable of simultaneously receiving 9 different channels. MC never implemented more than 3 however, (view two, record 1). In an XV combination, that meant in a household of 4, each person could watch whatever they wanted without limiting the others. The fight was however over the remotes. I used to have 4 remotes, permanently set and frigged one for each member of the household.

Hence why the most flexible solution for simple linear viewing is still a digital TV with its own built-in DVB-T2 tuner.
The recording must then be based on external recording devices. And then one runs into the DRM and copyright issues which means most of the time, external recording is impossible.
