I have doubts that a society that had issues like UFS would be normal. We already see it that institution.
I don't know which normal society you live in, but integration has worked in numerous instances. I went to a multi-racial school. And there are a lot more others than back then.
Even in Bloem, take Grey collage for instance, also used to be exclusively Afrikaans, and maintains it's heritage and performance, and is multi-racial.

Tuks mining school was 100% Afrikaans not so long ago. Standards have increased and the department has integrated well. The University seems to be offering good quality education still.
White people rarely have gangs. I think I know one white guy who was in a "Mixed" gang in my whole life, and he was a dck. I think he a journo these days? You see his articles posted here every now and then.. As far as I can remember, He had information about a guy who gang raped woman in Taiwan. He was also part of the gang. The Cresta gang!!! lol They told me they could burn down my house and kill my family if they wanted. I guess they were too scared cause my house and family are still here =) Maybe it was too far a walk from cresta lol
Anyways.. White people dont need a gang to get things done. Look at school shooters.

There is still a large group of white people getting accepted by universities. We won't go into the reasons, but how come at some institutions the hostels are 99% black. At UCT it is about 50:50. So there is some engineering going on. In a fair and balanced approach they wouldn't need to do this and nobody would complain about forced integration would they?
I can only refer to my experiance with UFS and TechOFS (now CUT FS). The choice of which hostel to stay at was left to the student to decide. So the white students apply to whites only/majority hostels and vice versa.
Forced integration would change this and allow the institution to dictate which one you get, based on availability. So you would find Khayalami is near capacity, becuase black people now form 60% of the student population, and hostels like Reitz is nowhere near full.
How about they split the hostels up according to the different main studies, like engineering uses some hostels, and BSC uses some other hostels. The number of hostels is assigned according to the expected number of students. This way, the selection of hostels takes race out of the equation, which will make people less unhappy, and make it feel less forced. Also great because you know everybody is going to study at the same time.
Uneven in what sense? If engineering needs 5 hostels, they get 5, if BSC needs 10 they get 10.
